SIX SIGMA AT 3M INC.

1) Benefits of the Six Sigma Program on the part of 3M Inc. would be the for

the betterment of the satisfaction of both internal and external customers,

development in the management, there is a standard approach in

implementing it and lastly and for the most important benefit is for the

overall savings in increased cost reduction and time. While there is a an

expense in implementing the program, most especially for the training and

development of the workers and the variability in pay rates for their

respective skills and capabilities. Possible risks in the Six Sigma Program

for the company is the difficulty to ascertain the desired results arising

from lack of analysis in effectively improving the process.

Measurement of tracking and reporting can be extracted through

quantifiable data such as the inputs in data for training, effectiveness of

the said training and the overall number of completed projects. By

comparing the variability in the results of performance and in operating

income between the past's approach and the implemented Six Sigma

Program, we can keep track of the data and generate reports objectively.
2) Departments may vary in its nature of operations, but it has an integrated

goal which they must achieve. Different departments should be

responsible for its functions to meet the objectives and mission of the

company. The Finance and Accounting department must have a correlative

goal of recording and verifying financial records and suggest the most

cost-efficient layout of money. Sales and Marketing Department must

reach the goal of satisfying its customers and generating or maximizing

profits while minimizing its costs.

The Senior Management has the key role of initiating change in the

organization by having to engage and motivate workers from the middle

management to the rank and file. They are known to provide guidance,
work directly with the supervisors to keep track of work and to

communicate to different functions covering the organization to meet its

common goal and mission.

3) Corporate Strategy is a long-term direction and achievement of the

business' success. With the help of the Six Sigma Program which is known

for the proper implementation of procedures and techniques and the

continuous improvement of a process, we can have a standard basis of

what should be done and what must be achieved in a very efficient and

effective manner.
4) The deployment of the Six Sigma Program must take consideration of the

analysis of processes by which we must consider on where to allocate or

who must be placed in a certain job, work or team. Implications for the

employee selection must consider the matching of the requirements for

the job and the skills capability or the capacity of the worker to carry out

the task required. In Organizational Structure, the management must keep

in mind the qualities and specifications of the placement of people in an

orderly and conformative manner. And as for the reward systems, non-

monetary or non-monetary, the recognition of the worker's job has a large

effect in the succeeding performance of the worker. Motivation may come

intrinsically or extrinsically, supervisors and the line managers must take

good care of the morale and satisfaction of the employees. For this

implications being considered in the deployment of Six Sigma, it can serve

as a large factor mainly in the efficiency of the output.

5) Process improvement is not new in 3M Inc., they have been good at it for a

long time, but what differentiates between the old practice and the Six

Sigma implementation is that projects and processes are well-executed

with the help of techniques and tools in the implementation, and

completed tasks and projects are progressively increasing. And with the

help of Six Sigma, growth, savings and cash generations are easily met.
