Reflection 4: Critical Reading Self-Evaluation and Brainstorming Ideas for Portfolio

PART 1 Reflecting on the readings:

1. Jeff Chang- 5. This reading was fairly understandable. Everything that Chang writes

about is very recent so it engages my interest. I was able to understand his main points.

Richard R. Valencia- 3. Although the reading was not difficult, I had some difficulty

understanding some of his key points. I also blame this because I did not give myself

time to space my reading so I can take better notes.

2. Before reading I like to research the author. This gives me a better understanding of their

worlds view. Knowing their worlds view will help me see where their claims are coming

from to form their argument. I know I am a slow reader so I need to make sure I set

aside enough time to read and break up long reading assignments into chunks and take

notes on anything I dont understand.

3. Language/Diction, New Realizations, Questions for Clarification, Questions for the

Author, Focused Annotations

Part 3 Directions:

Establish your ETHOS as a writer, a critical thinker, a college student, a university-bound

scholar:

What do you want people to think about who you are as a student?

Ambitious, determined and driven, thats what I hope Im seen as a

student.
How do you want people to think about the way you see yourself and

your educational journey? I want people to see the dreamer that I am. To

see even though it took me awhile to get back on track. Im back and

ready to take on new challenges that will help me grow as a person.

Why did you make the choice to join the Puente Program, an

accelerated, challenging program that pushes your reading and writing

abilities? Being a first generation student I had no idea what to expect in

college or what classes I had to take or just how to navigate around

campus. Reading about the program it gave me a feeling of community

and welcoming.

What are your basic values and/or beliefs about life in general and your

educational path specifically? I have always believed that hard work will

pay off. If its easy its not worth it. The whole point of learning is

stretching your horizons and to test you knowledge. We need to be open

to new perspectives in life.

What word, phrase, or quote best captures how you want people to see

you in the context of your educational journey? Explain why you think

this is an important word, phrase, or quote. Driven, For me being driven

means that even though there might be setbacks along the way Im able

to continue on my goals and acknowledging that those setback will make

me stronger. Means that Im committed to myself and to my success. Im

always hungry to learn and expand myself.

Connect to your audience and use PATHOS to connect with your intended audience.
Aside from me, your instructor, who do you most want to reach and

impact with a demonstration of your work? Who is your INTENDED

audience? College students

Is it an audience of today? A future audience? Describe your audience.

My intended audience would be the future puentistas or first generation

students.

Consider your purpose and how you hope to impact, influence, or reach your particular

intended audience:

What do you want your intended audience to understand about you and

your learning journey? I want my audience to not be scared to speak

their minds and to express themselves as who they are. I want them to

see that being in college is not easy and just being there and trying to

succeed is a big step. I want them to always stay focus and have a

couple of set goals. I want them to realize that college is all about finding

out who you are and your interest they need to be open-minded to

aspects in life.

Demonstrate your growth as a critical thinker and writer (LOGOS)
