One wine stands out from the rest: Tribute, a 2014 Barbera, a recent Gold

specifically as a tribute to a visit Dan took with his family to his dads (and
103-year-old grandmothers) hometown in Italy four decades ago, which
became a strong inspiration for the tasting room and service-style at DANCIN.

An insiders guide to the packaging:

The bottles are all-genuine Italian or French glass because its important to Dan to stay true to the varietals hes producing.
On each label, the dancer is either touching the ground or has a shadow on the ground, which represents the connection between
the wine and the earth, capturing the sense of place and the transformation of the activities in the vineyard and its corresponding
terroir into wine through the celebration of the wine dress. The seven dots on the capsule represent the seven distinct Pinot Noir
clones planted on the estate. Also on the capsule, youll find DANCINs signature phrase, Dance like nobodys watching.
The name DANCIN comes from combining the names of owners Dan and Cindy Marca. The name makes sense on more
than one level, Dan says, because Every vintage is an annual dance in harmony with nature and humanity, with vines and
wines. It includes all the partners that show up during the seasonbe it good or challengingperfect temperatures,

perating an Ashland fine-dining fixture for more than two decades, Rob Harvey
has good reason to stay the course.
A key component to our success in the service industry has been a strong
and consistent foundation of quality service, he says. Trends in food and wine
come and go, but a guest's desire to feel sincerely appreciated, never changes.
Although this philosophy ensures that food menus change infrequently, it doesnt
hold sway over wine selections at either Beasys on the Creek or Harveys newer,
namesake venture on Ashland Plaza. Both establishments have promoted Southern
Oregon wines as the region has risen in prominence.
Its so much about a story, says Harvey of acquainting customers with new wines.
The tale took more than a decade to unfold at Beasys, where diners long ordered
varietals ubiquitous to California and Washington, says Harvey. In the early 2000s,
he and wife Anny, who oversees the restaurants wine lists, education and training,
OPEN 7 DAYS noticed that colleagues and competitors around town offered virtually the same
listsdriven largely by representatives for Californias biggest vintners.

wines by the glass to accompany hearty appetizers that can substitute as entrees, as
well as seasonal specials. An eye-catching chalkboard highlights a different Southern
Oregon winery each month with reduced prices on both single servings and bottles.
Quady North of Jacksonville, Kriselle Cellars of Sams Valley and Irvine & Roberts
Family Vineyards of Ashland all have gained exposure at Harveys Place.
Glass wine pours are incredibly popular over here, says Harvey. We want more
flavors; we want to taste more things.
Diners can taste Oregons famed Dungeness crab as a cocktail or Pacific Rim crab
cakes at Beasys, or perched atop a salad of mixed greens, mango and avocado at
Harveys Place. In any iteration, the crabs distinct flavor is elevated, says Harvey, with
Quady North Pistoleta, a blend of viognier, marsanne, roussanne and grenache blanc.
Another Quady varietal, syrah stands up to the savor of Harveys baby-back
ribs, served either as an a la carte starter or an entre with choice of sides. Harveys
mainstay burger, assembled with cremini mushrooms and Jarlsberg cheese on a
pretzel bun, plays off myriad notes of fruit and spice in Abacela tempranillo, says
Harvey. Rich razor-clam chowder, he says, contrasts with Irvines crisp chardonnay.
Looking for a food scene, says Harvey, visitors and locals need look no farther than
Harveys Place or Beasys on the Creek to sample the wine scene of Southern Oregon.

TRIUM

ROGUE VALLEY
TRIUM is a Latin term meaning, of the three,
reflective of the three classic Bordeaux varietals:
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet
Franc. These comprise the core varietals
for Triums flagship wine, Growers Cuve.
The Trium label, with its reproduction of a
sixteenth-century woodcut depicting a vineyard
worker, speaks to the hard work in the vineyard
that pays off in the glass and to the owners
dedication and uncompromising standards
from planting to bottling.
Since 2003, the Lotspeich family has selected
part of the harvest from their 17-acre Pheasant
Vineyard for Trium wines, a boutique label
of no more than one thousand cases per year.
Triums flagship vintage is Growers Cuve, a
proprietary Bordeaux blend that has regularly
garnered awards since its first bottling.
Visitors to the estate tasting room, a pleasant Winemaking Cold Storage Wine Lab Services

A GRAPE'S JOURNEY/ DISTRIBUTION

by MJ DASPIT
Getting Wine Out
Into the World

A fter wine has been bottled, corked, foiled and labeled, the last part of the
grapes journey is the all-important process of getting the finished product
to consumers. While Southern Oregon is growing more grapes and making more

wine than ever before, local consumption is not growing fast enough to absorb it
all. This reality has resulted in wineries needing to get local wines to a larger local
consumer base and transport wines to larger urban areas across the country. So,
how do Southern Oregon wineries effectively expand their reach?
Wine Scene put this question to Mike Wisnovsky, whose father Frank Wisnovsky
planted the Rogue Valleys first post-prohibition commercial vineyard and in 1978
founded Valley View Winery. When Mike and his brother Mark assumed control
of the family business, their distribution followed the three tier model, in which a
commercial distributor functioned as a middleman between the winery and retail
outlets. Several years ago, under pressure to lower prices to remain competitive with
national and international brands, Wisnovsky took on distribution himself, riding
around in a truck and fighting to get my wines into the back door, then onto the
shelf and then onto the right shelf. Wisnovsky increased sales of Valley View wines
dramatically, first by concentrating on grocery store placement, then expanding into
on premise restaurant sales. His use of the direct sales model was so effective that he
now handles distribution of four other brands in addition to Valley View.
Quady North Sales Manager Darius Price spoke of self-distribution as a strategy
that works well in an area focused on local terroir. Restaurants prominently
display what they have from farms or creameries down the street. Taking
advantage of that emphasis means offering local wines particularly suited to a
restaurants menu. A chef might look at the price list and say, What is this? Can I
try it? Being a direct supplier I can say yes, as opposed to a distributor who might
not be able to open up a bottle for people to try before they put it on their list or in
their shop. Price pointed out that scarcely a day goes by in the tasting room that
he doesnt have clients who first discovered a Quady North wine at a restaurant.
Because I do the distribution, I know exactly what wines are at what place. They
may be drinking our 4-2-A Syrah at a restaurant in Medford, then they come into
our tasting room and I pour them a single-vineyard Syrah.
Since the Rogue Valley attracts visitors from all over the world, having a

Wine Services and Storage (OWS). A business that originated in McMinnville in
2001, OWS has operated a warehouse and shipping facility in Medford since June
2014. Manager Mark Sunderland talked about how the new facility can benefit
Southern Oregon wineries. Some of our clients just use us for storage, since the
secure warehouse stays at a constant temperature of 57-58 degrees, and retrieve
wine as they need it. The OWS warehouse is a bonded facility, meaning wines
can be held there, aging in-bottle, without any taxes being paid by the producer
until the wine leaves the premises, a financial strategy that can benefit the winery.
OWS also offers direct-to-consumer shipping of wines stored in the warehouse.
The winery collects the money and we take care of the packaging and shipping,
Sunderland explained. We also have a trucking division. Our trucks are up and
down Interstate 5 from here to the Bay Area and to McMinnville every week. From
there, OWS can take Southern Oregon wine literally anywhere in the country.
