Developmental Lesson Plan

Subject or Topic: Sun and its purpose


Common Core/PA Standard(s):
3.3.3.B1
-Relate the rotation of the earth and day/night, to the apparent movement of the sun,
moon, and stars across the sky. Describe the changes that occur in the observable shape of the
moon over the course of a month.

Learning Targets/Objectives: The third grade students will be able to describe the different
characteristics of the sun by completing the last section of the KWL chart after the lesson is
given.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

Assessment Scale:
Students will be assessed by the completion of their KWL chart and exit slip. If students
completed their entire KWL chart they will receive an advanced. If students filled out two
parts of the KWL chart they will receive a basic. Students who only filled out one part of the
KWL chart will receive a below basic. Students who did not fill out the parts of the KWL
chart will receive unsatisfactory.

Subject Matter/Content: The sun and how it affects the earth


Prerequisites: Basic understanding of the sun
Key Vocabulary:
Sun- closest star to Earth
Photosphere- surface of the sun
Core- center of the sun
Prominences- jets of burning gas
Sunspots- dark patches on the sun
Corona- suns atmosphere

Content/Facts: The photosphere is the outer layer of the sun. The sun is about 4.5 billion years
old. The sun gives off two types of energy; light and heat.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
To begin the lesson, students will work on the first two sections of the KWL chart to
activate prior knowledge of the subject.
Students will then pair up with another peer to have a pair and share discussion to
talk about the first section of the KWL chart on what they already know about the sun.
As a class discussion, students will have the opportunity to share aloud the second
section of the KWL chart on what they want to know. The teacher will actively engage
in the classroom discussion with the students.

Development/Teaching Approaches
As an overview to the lesson, the book The Sun by LL Owens will be read. This book
will give students an introduction to the sun and the different characteristics that it has.
During the video, students should be taking notes on what is being said so they can
reference back to it when completing their KWL chart.
Students will then view a PowerPoint to expand on the information they have received
