Individual project
Classroom and house. A project to embrace
different people with different backgrounds
but with a common wish: learn.

FIRST - democracy
The tech world tells us that in a network,
more people produce more interactions.
Knowledge has to be spread in the same
way, increasing growth and resilience.

SECOND - entirety
Rudolf Steiner told us that the human is a
balanced harmony of thinking, feeling, and
willpower. The learning system has to involve
the whole person thru the life game.

THIRD - Japanese architecture

An architecture of light and shadows that
with few simple volumes can tell everything.

The cube: so simple but so universal. Big ne-

sts or small universes, these are the goals of
the project. A metabolic architecture that
can change in time to shape new spaces for
different people.
45x45 cm wood cube with three key fun-
ctions: seat, step, box.
Like playing Lego or Minecraft, cubes can
create mountains, caves, and uplands where
every module is a chance to learn something.

A primordial natural environment where the

first humans get their knowledge. A knowle-
dge lab where users climb to discover new
things, where users hide to meditate, where
users meet again to share.

What means today to set up an exhibition?
What kind of art would we find?
Can we totally transform a space in a small
arc of time?

These kinds of questions guided us to deve-

lop a technology that could transform a re-
gular rectangular space into a flexible envi-
ronment.

We defined two areas joined by two techno-

logy apparatus.

1ST AREA - auditorium

The inner part of the building composed by
two stepped stalls, one the inverse of the
other, one above and one below the ground
level. The central corridor, thanks to his neu-
tral elevation, can host in the best way even
audience with disabilities.

2ND AREA - exhibition space

Is an annular area that encases the audito-
rium at ground level.

1ST TECHNOLOGY - curtain forest

We think that the most primitive partition
wall, the curtain, integrated with a compu-
terized wrapping system, can help curators
and directors to manage the space of both
exhibit and auditorium areas.
Plus, curtains helps to manage and diffuse
natural light and creating a soundproof en-
vironment.

2ND TECHNOLOGY - sun shading

An analog technology was used to manage
the facade transition. A multitude of auto-
matized vertical sun shutters helps to keep a
constant natural light apportion.

A project that could host everybody who
would meditate, reflect, walk, rest

We composed a three steps architecture:

FIRST - peristyle
A geometric garden where people could walk
choosing their path. More than 600 square
concrete 90x90 cm plates over a pond with
bamboos and aquatic plants. The user can
create his own path, step by step, plate by
plate, according to the vegetation.

SECOND - pronaos
The joint between the outside and the inside
is a reverse crepidoma. It brings users down-
stairs to enter the naos pavilion.

THIRD - naos
A compenetration between a cube, a cylin-
der and a sphere generated the naos pavi-
lion. Symbolically we volumetrically repre-
sented the transition from earth (cube) and
the sky (sphere).
Not only a symbolic reason, but also the
need of the best place to relax and meditate.
Into a dome, with no view outside, immerse
in a soft light coming out from the top of the
structure.

Center for the

scope of

Laboratorio anno 2

team:

Endrico Da Pian,
Marta Magnaguagno
The theme of this project starts with an un-
finished project. The Herzog & de Meurons
Fondazione Feltrinelli building should have
had a twin on the opposite side of Porta Vol-
ta.

The task of the atelier was to study and desi-

gn a new architecture that could talk to the
surroundings and could be a center for the
Mediterraneans cultures.
This architecture had three main functions
to host:

FIRST - cultural
An auditorium, an exhibition space, and a li-
brary.

SECOND - commercial
Office areas, a restaurant, and a bar.

THIRD - host
Apartments for refugees and a meditation
space.

Our team chose to develop the building

around the theme of the courtyard, an im-
portant architectonic topic that can be seen
in the Milan urban pattern.

The permeability of the building to the pu-

blic space was an important topic for us. The
open galleries that connect the courtyards
allow walking thru different layers of the bu-
ilding remaining in a sort of public plaza.

The public areas are close to the ground whi-

le on the upper floor we placed the most pri-
vate spaces connected with a wide outdoor
gallery overlooking the courtyard plaza.

The project works on two main focuses:
a small pavilion for student facilities and a
study on architectonic technical details.

We worked primarily on locking the pavilion

in the context. For doing that we doubled
some of the geometrical axes already exi-

Paredes y Pedrosa studio wanted to work on
the theme of the 2017 WAVE workshop, the
reconstruction in Syria, thru modular systems
inserted in the Aleppo city matrix.

Our group worked on designing a temporary

modular building to absolve the social and
religious needs lost with the war bombings.

We started from Arabic architecture refe-

rences and contemporary revisitation of the
same theme, such as the project for the
Alhambra competition by Aires Mateus.

The model, made assembling our units, is a

25x25m square (625m); a white sheet spre-
ad over the city of Aleppo, with domes and
studied spaces underneath.

A rocky and rugged terrain with an amazing
vista.
The project was yes for a contest of a private
owner but even a personal stylistic exercise.

Four were the cornerstone topics:

FIRST - integration
The three floors are not alienated vertically
respecting the terrain, without lots of exca-
vation works.

SECOND - usability
One stair and elevator tower, connect the
street level to the terrace one. Working with
vast outdoor spaces permits to make acces-
sible every area of the house without obsta-
cles.

THIRD - boundary
An experiment playing with the in/out boun-
dary with large openings taking advantage
of the warm Sardinia climate.

FOURTH - modernism
Important references for this work are the
Californian houses designed by Richard Neu-
tra, Craig Ellwood, and Pierre Koenig.

Two are the keywords for this project.

Space, because in where we live and interact

with
other organisms and objects in the environ-
ment.

Time, because if is true that there are natural

cycles is also true that since the beginning
humans started to count time.

This project wants to be the link between the

architectonic concepts of space and time, fu-
sing them in a continuum loop. All the fun-
ctional volumes are distributed beside a cir-
cle, in correspondence of the time they are
usually used.

The house is so formed from two hemisphe-

res connected on the 8-20 axis.

The two parts are open spaces without walls.

Tree levels of sliding vertical sunblinds permit
to create different ambients configuration.
Also, the inner garden is divided into two he-
mispheres. Water and night, earth and day.
The house is oriented with the north-south
axis in correspondence of the 12-24 line, de-
pending on the site.

In such a rural context the architecture has
to watch at the deep wisdom of an ancient
ethnic group such as the Buyi people.

Isnt the best way to build, the technique al-

ready used for the last centuries?
From a study of the traditional building tech-
nologies, we come up with a timber structu-
re on top of a brick wall that provides a dry
base for the top of the building.

Isnt the best way to enlarge the space, desi-

gning a multifunctional space?
A modular environment can be changed
every time the viewer wants. We come up
with a multifunctional space designed from
a basic cubic module, that can fit the evo-
lution of the community during the seasons
and the years.

Isnt the best way to decorate, replicate the

traditional patterns and colors?
Unbelievable is the variety of Buyi fabrics and
ornaments, but two are the key factors that
generate them: round shape and blue hues.
