Social Action Production Proposal

Name of production

Your Story

Reason for following this issue

The issue here is that children are not interested in reading. This effects the community
as there is a lack of literacy skills in the local area. It would be easy to cover this social
issue because we could gain permission from a school to be able to film and
interview students asking their opinions on reading. We could also ask teachers and
ABC ambassadors on their opinions on the issue. There has been a lot done on this
issue on a global/national scale through charities such as sport relief who raise money
to help younger children read.

Length of production

Weve aimed our production to be around 5-10 minutes.

Production angle, how and why

A lack of reading from younger children has always been a concern in this country,
charities such as ABC to Read has encouraged many primary school children to read
on a regular basis, in order to boost their literacy skills. Through this, we hope to inform
the public, specifically teachers and parents to encourage them to read with their
children in order to boost their literacy skills. This will be done through statistics,
interviews and opinions in order to change the publics view on the issue and
encourage them to make a change. We think that using this kind of footage will
make it informative as well as engaging to the viewer.

A production layout (beginning, middle and end)

Opening:
We will open with statistics that clearly show that there is a need for improvement
regarding the number of children reading. It shows that on a global scale, the UK has
lower average children literacy scores in comparison to other countries around the
world. This will be done through voice-overs. We will use thing like alphabet magnets,
abacus and white boards in order for the footage to link back to young children as
well as making it more interesting as this may be the most boring part of the social
action, but we believe that it will be the most important.

Middle:
Here is when we will have our interviews with the ABC ambassadors and the children
from Lynch Hill Primary School. We will get their opinions on the issue, what they do to
tackle the issue and what they read

End:
We will end the production with a conclusion about how parents and teachers can
help children to see reading as an enjoyable thing and pass this onto their children

Target Audience and why

Survey
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FP6KL6V
Our target audience is 24-45 male and females from all socio-economic groups
because the video is aimed at parents and teachers. Specifically C1, because
teachers fit into that category so they would care about the issue more than others
would. This chosen target audience can be backed up through a survey that we
carried out.

Where your video will be uploaded / shown

Due to legal and ethical issues, we will not be allowed to upload the video online,
this means we will give ABC to Read and Lynch Hill Primary School a physical copy of
the video for them to promote further

Copyright issues / legal ethical issues you may face

The ethical issues that we will face when filming our documentary is that we are filming at a
school, which already means that we have a lot of legal issues behind it as we have to get
adult permission for children under the age of 16. Also when interviewing some of the
students at the school we had to protect their identity by not saying their name and covering
the school logo on their school uniform in order to protect the where about of the children
when at school. Another ethical issue that we may face is how we portray the children, as
we are not allowed to portray them in a certain way that may be negative also when talking
about children learning how to read we are not putting any blame on the upbringing of the
specific child. We are only showing that this charity ABC to Read helps children learn to read
as well as help them build self-esteem and confidence and not the problems that they have
when reading as every child is in a different situation and level.

According to the Channel 4 guidelines, when filming children under the age of 16 is that
Programme-makers should not encourage or incite under 18s to say or do things that they
would not have done otherwise. Showing off and playing up for the cameras should be
discouraged. means that we should not be encouraging the children to say certain things
as everything that they say must be their own opinion. When asking the children questions
we have to ask simple and easy questions that they understand what they are being asked
to give an opinion on. According to the guidelines, the questions shouldnt be of the
following matters of: sexual matters, personal relationships or private family matters,
antisocial or illegal behavior, alcohol or drug use/abuse, addictions of any kind, medical
matters; illnesses they suffer or have suffered from, physical or mental; generally being
unhappy, being depressed, self-harm or having suicidal thoughts; accidents or attacks they
have been involved in which have led to serious harm.

Production

Before you go off and film please be aware of the following.

PRODUCTION TIPS:

Interview in relevant locations

Make sure there is no background noise when filming - ask to turn off all machines or film in a
quiet location and if outside try and use a wind cover and microphone.

Use TWO cameras when filming - One following the interviewer and one following you as you
had with your multi camera unit

Get MORE footage than you need - you can always cut items out but you can't add once
you have filmed

Think about how you want the final product to look before you start filming

Add archive footage (clips, newspaper clippings, footage from news stories etc...) but
ALWAYS reference them on screen and make sure you have permission to use them

Once filming is finished make sure the following is complete BEFORE you start to edit your
production
