Abstract

This paper will explore information about and relating to the job of a Computer Engineer. It will

contains facts concerning the responsibilities. It will also contain job outlook information,

average pay, density of Computer Engineers by state, PSE (Post-Secondary Education), and

training.

Computer Engineer Information and the Facts of the Job

The job I researched was a Graphic Designer. I chose this job because there are currently

a great need for Computer Engineers and there will be an increasing need for them due to

advancing technology plus this career choice not only interests me but also makes good money. I

hope that I will graduate from high school, receive my education in a college with a excellent

Computer Engineer program, and eventually become a Computer Engineer.

A few things that Computer Engineers have as responsibilities are design new computer

hardware, test completed the hardware they designed, update existing computer equipment so

that it will work with the new software, and maintain knowledge of computer engineering trends

and new technology. They need to be able to keep up to date on new technology and technology

trends. They also need good time management in order to keep up with set deadlines. Many

employers prefer engineers with an advanced degree which can be obtained by a 2 year degree.

After that, if you wish to continue you want a career in academia, a PhD in computer engineering

is the answer.

Computer Engineers generally start off with a salary of $61,000-$76,000 just after

graduating college. Later on as they progress in their career that average annual salary of a

computer engineer is $102,450, which is 106% higher than the average U.S. salary. One of the

benefits of getting an education to become a Computer Engineer is gaining the useful skill of

computer programming. There is also the benefit of being able to gain practical experience in

school through internships and co-ops. Another benefit is the growing rate of jobs for Computer

Engineers, in fact it is expected to have an average growth rate of 9 percent from 2010-2020.

Post-secondary education is required to become a Computer Engineer. There are over 134

colleges that offer courses in Computer Engineering in the United States alone. The top 3

colleges are Massachusettes Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, and University

of California- Berkeley with Massachusetts Institute of Technology being number 1. The

minimum education required to become a Computer Engineer is usually a bachelors degree.

Most employers require a bachelors in either computer science, computer programming,

computer engineering, computer information systems, electrical engineering, or similar computer

related degrees. Internships are definitely a big help in trying to land a job as a Computer

Engineer because many employers will not hire anyone without some sort of relevant experience.
