Literary devices are the tools and techniques of language that authors use to convey
meaning. Skilled use of literary devices brings richness and clarity to a text. A sound
understanding of these devices/terms can help a reader decode the message
an author is eliciting through their work with greater ease.

B) Directions: Read the lines of poetry. Slashes represent line breaks. Figure out which technique is
being used: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, or personification. In the boxes, explain how you figured out
your answer. It is possible that more than one technique is being used. If you necessary, explain
each.
