Introduction
Keying Scheme ~ Modules and Power Shelves
Eltek rectifier and converter modules are available in a vast range of output volt-
ages, and the modules may be physically inserted in the same power shelf.
A keying scheme is required to achieve that a specific module is only plugged into
a suitable power shelf, thus avoiding damaging the module and the power system.

Micropack Keying Scheme

The keying scheme for Micropack systems is based in inserting one or several
keys (or small pieces of plastic) in the slots located both on the modules rear (po-
sition A-D) and on the power cores upper and lower borders (position 1-4).

When a module and a power shelf have a key inserted in the same position, the
module will not plug into the shelf.
A slot with inserted key may be indicated with 1, and an empty slot with 0.
For example, a power shelf suitable for 24V Flatpack2 solar chargers will be shipped
from factory keyed as <110 001>. Then, only modules keyed as <001 110> can be
plugged into the shelf, e. g. the Flatpack2 24/1500 HE Solar Chargers.
In general, Flatpack2 modules and power shelves for industrial applications are al-
ways keyed at factory. When required, Eltek will also ship keyed Flatpack2 modules
and power shelves for telecom applications.
FlatpackS modules and power shelves are always keyed from factory.
NOTICE:
A keyed power shelf will ONLY allow modules keyed for the specific shelf to be plugged in the shelf.
A non-keyed power shelf will allow both keyed and non-keyed modules to be plugged in the shelf.

WARNING:
Never install modules in power shelves with different output voltage than the modules. The modules output volt- !
age and the power systems output voltage must always be the same. Device

Communication
CAN Bus Termination
To ensure a correct bus communication and avoid data reflection, you must always
terminate the CAN bus with two 120 resistors, one at each end of the line (60
bus impedance).
Eltek DC power systems are shipped from factory with the CAN buses already ter-
minated with 120 resistors. The CAN bus termination is implemented with a
special RJ45 plug with built-in 120 end-of-line resistor.
When connecting more CAN nodes to the bus, you have to remove the CAN bus
termination plug from one of the CAN bus ends, and plug it in one of the CAN ports
on the last connected CAN node.

Flatpack2 DC Power System (Telecom or Industrial App)

Figure 11. Example of CAN bus addressing and termination in a Flatpack2 power sys-
tem using the Smartpack2 Basic Industrial controller
Smartpack2-based DC power systems implemented with the Smartpack2 Basic
Industrial controller have more than one CAN bus, as this industrial controller has
two separated buses: CAN1 and CAN2.
All the CAN buses in the system are to be terminated with two 120 resistors.
Usually, the systems are engineered using CAN1 bus for communication among
controllers and CAN nodes, and CAN2 bus to communicate with rectifiers and
DC/DC converters.

CAN Bus Cabling

In addition to the two dedicated wires for communication, the CAN bus multi-wire
cable must integrate wires for the CAN power supply and other signals. In standard
industrial environments, the CAN bus can use standard cabling without shielding
or twisted pair wiring. If very low interference (EMI) is required, a CAT-5 twisted-pair
cable is recommended.

8 Quick Reference Guide Eltek Power Supply Systems

Communication
CAN Bus Addressing and Configuration
The control system is Elteks power systems consists of control units or hardware
devices connected to the systems CAN bus1. Several types of control units may
be connected, such as:
Compack controllers
Smartpack, Smartpack2 and SmartpackS controllers
Smartnode control units
Battery Monitors
Load Monitors
I/OMonitors
Mains Monitors
CAN Power Unit
Other CAN nodes

All rectifiers, controllers and other control units connected to the Elteks CAN bus
must have a unique address or ID number.
The control systems master controller assigns automatically the rectifiers ad-
dresses (software assignment).
The power systems control units make use of DIP switches for configuring their
unique CAN bus ID number (hardware assignment). The only exception is the Com-
pack and Smartpack2 Master controllers, which have factory assigned specific ID
numbers <1>and <11> (not changeable).

Software Assignment Rectifiers

Each rectifier in the DC power system is automatically configured by its controller
with a unique CAN bus ID number.
When the rectifiers are hot-plugged in the system the first time, the systems con-
troller dynamically assigns the rectifiers with the next available ID number (soft-
ware-assignment), and automatically increases the number of communicating rec-
tifiers on the CAN bus. Also, the controller registers the rectifiers ID numbers, or
CAN bus address (01, 02), together with their serial numbers.
When a previously installed rectifier is again hot-plugged in the system, it retains
its previous ID and serial number, unless reassigned during a Reset Rectifier com-
mand.
WARNING! To replace installed rectifiers with new ones, remove the installed rectifiers and wait for the controller
to notify communication error with the extracted rectifiers. Push the new rectifiers firmly inwards one module at
a time, allowing a 2s delay to plug them in the power shelf. Start with the shelf position with lowest ID number.
Lock the rectifiers.

When a new system controller is inserted in an existing system, the controller will
recalculate the number of connected rectifiers, reassigning them with the same ID
numbers as they already have in memory.

Identifying Power Shelves: 4AC, 2AC or 4AC-3kW

You can identify the type of power
shelves used by your system by read-
ing the shelfs label, or by looking at
the shape of the shelfs AC mains ter-
minals, at its rear; (viewable by re-
moving the rectifier in the shelfs 1st
and or 4th position).
Also, 4AC-3kW power shelves are
longer in depth, and have 2 terminal
blocks (TB).

About AC, DC Earthing Systems
Earth connections are in particular important where frequent lightning might in-
duce high voltage levels in AC supply and in battery and load cables, and also to
protect electronics from noise and inference (EMI). You find more in depth informa-
tion in the Guidelines for Lightning and Surge Protection, document 2024623.
To prevent the risk of electric shock by contact, all cabinets chassis are to be
electrically connected to Protective Earth (PE) or AC Earth 2.

Telecom Equipment
Also, it is a common practice for telecom power supply equipment to have its com-
mon DC output rail (+ or ) connected to a separate Telecom Earth (TE) or DC
Earth 3.
Usually, TE and PE are kept separated and linked together at only one common
point in the external telecom equipment or someplace in the premises, thus pre-
venting possible noise in the PE cabling to cause interference in sensitive electron-
ics connected to TE.
When applicable, TEs one common connection point can instead be implemented
inside the power system, by connecting the common DC output rail directly to
chassis and PE.

AC Mains
Mains Phases versus Rectifier ID
In power systems with 3-phase AC Mains feed, each rectifier is internally connect-
ed to the 230VAC phases, in such a pattern that loads the 3 phases evenly.

Phase Balancing
The distribution of rectifiers among the phases is implemented both via internal
wiring to the power shelves, and how the shelfs back-wiring card routes the phas-
es to each rectifier position.

Figure 14. Example showing distribution of rectifiers among the 3 Mains phases

Plug-and-Play Rectifiers versus Phase Monitoring

When a rectifier is hot plugged in a power shelf for the first time, the systems
master controller assigns the next available ID number to the rectifier, starting
with 01. The controller registers the rectifiers Serial Number and ID number.
When a previously installed (hot plugged) rectifier is inserted in a power shelf, the
master controller recognizes the module, and assigns the same ID to the rectifier.
In other words, the controller and the rectifier remember the assigned ID number,
even after removing and reinserting the rectifier in the shelf.
To achieve a more controlled ID assignment, you should always insert & hot-plug
new rectifiers in the indicated power shelf position, one module at a time, start-
ing with ID number 1, 2, 3, and so on. The sequence is indifferent after ID number
6. You find more information on page 21.
This position-versus-ID number relationship is very important, as the controller al-
ways uses rectifier IDs 01 and 04 to monitor mains phase L1, rectifier IDs 02 and 05
to monitor mains phase L2 and rectifier IDs 03 and 06 to monitor mains phase L3.
When both rectifiers, monitoring the same phase, report that the mains phase
voltage is lower than the configured limit, then the controller broadcasts a Mains
Phase Lx warning (one phase has failed).
For example: accidentally inserting a rectifier with ID02 in a power shelf position
356850.103, 1v0_2012-12

internally connected to mains phase 1, will cause the controller to monitor phase
1 thinking it monitors phase 2. Then a phase 1 fault will be alarmed as a phase 2
fault.

AC Mains
Correct Rectifier Positions in Power Shelves
Eltek DC power systems are normally shipped from factory with empty power
shelves. The rectifier modules are shipped in separate packaging, and you have to
install the modules in the correct position in the power shelves, with respect to
their ID number (or CAN bus address). Do not relocate already installed rectifiers.

Correct Rectifier Positions in Flatpack2 Systems

For first time installations of rectifiers in Flatpack2 power systems, follow the
scheme below:
1. Find out your systems power shelf type; refer to page 15
2. Find out if your systems AC mains feed is
<230VAC, 3 phase> or <400VAC, 3 phase and N>
3. Insert & hot-plug the rectifiers in the indicated power shelf positions, one
module at a time, allowing a 2s delay between them and starting with
ID number 1, 2, 3, and so on. (Indifferent after ID# 6)
Follow one of the four figures (I, II, III or IV) below:
356850.103, 1v0_2012-12

21
Quick Reference Guide Eltek Power Supply Systems
AC Mains
Correct Rectifier Positions in Minipack Systems, 2U
Minipack 2U systems are fed with 3 One-phase 230VAC Mains input circuits. Each
input circuit is internally connected to feed 2 rectifiers, in such a pattern that loads
the 3 circuits evenly.
If your system is supplied from a 3-phase Mains input circuit, the use of a 3ph AC
Input Connection Kit, part 228898 or 238394, is required. Refer to page 14.

Figure 15. Example showing distribution of Minipack rectifiers among the 3 Mains feeds

To achieve a more controlled ID assignment, you should always insert & hot-plug
new Minipack rectifiers in the power shelf, one module at a time, in following shelf
position order: 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6.
Shelf Position for Minipack Rectifiers
Position # 1 2 3 4 5 6

ID# 01 04 02 05 03 06

This position-versus-ID number relationship is very important for the correct moni-
toring of the mains circuit, as the controller always uses rectifier ID01, 02 and 03
to monitor the Mains Feed 1, 2 and 3 respectively. If these rectifiers malfunction,
rectifier ID 04, 05 and 06 will automatically take over.
For example: accidentally inserting a rectifier with ID02 in a power shelf position
internally connected to mains feed 1, will cause the controller to monitor mains
feed 1 thinking it monitors mains feed 2.

Alarms & Monitoring I/O Signals
Connecting Standard Alarm Relays & Digital Inputs
The alarm outputs in Eltek power sys-
tems use the Fail-Safe Operation Mode
(relay coils energized in the systems nor-
mal operation mode). When the system is
in alarm mode, the alarm relay coils are
de-energized.
The figure shows the position of the re-
lay contacts when the relay coils are de-
energized (PS system in alarm mode).
In order to implement monitored fail-
safe digital inputs circuits, the external
relay coil must be energized and the con-
tacts closed in the systems normal mode
of operation.

Figure 21. Recommended fail-safe connection of alarm and input circuits

LVD Latching Contactors ~ Connections

The LVBD and LVLD 1 functionality implemented in most of Eltek power systems
employs magnetically latching contactors 2.
The coil of latching contactors is not energized in any state. They change state
from open to close, or vice versa, when a positive pulse is applied to its coil (con-
tacts closed) or when a negative pulse is applied to its coil (contacts opened).

Terminals & Pin-out Location, System Interface Card

Flatpack2 systems are shipped from factory with the CON5 signals already con-
nected.

Some of the Smartpack controllers internal system signals are accessible on

DSub connector CON5, on the controllers rear panel.
Using the System Interface Card (Art. 200625) and a standard 15 pins DSub ca-
ble, the signals on CON5 may be accessible at any suitable location inside the sys-
tem.
For detailed information about the cards pin-out location and terminal block con-
nections, refer to the figures in this section.

Notice

Alarms & Monitoring I/O Signals
Terminals & Pin-out Location, Battery Interface Card
The Smartpack controllers battery monitoring signals are accessible on DSub
connectors CON4 and CON3, on the controllers rear panel.
Using the Battery Connection Kit consists of a Battery Interface Card (Art.
200576) and a standard 15 pins DSub cable you can make the signals on CON4
accessible at any suitable location inside your system, e.g. near the battery blocks.
When extra battery monitoring signals are required, you can use an extra Battery
Connection Kit connected to the controllers CON3.
For detailed information about the cards pin-out location and terminal block con-
nections, refer to the figures in this section.

For temperature monitoring of the

battery compartment, we recom-
mend the use of the Temperature
Sense Kit, instead of connecting the
sensor cable directly to the termi-
nals, pin 9-10.
The Temperature Sense Kit is con-
nected to the Battery Interface Card
(Art. 200576), or directly to the con-
trollers CON3 or CON4, if unused.

CAN Bus Nodes
The CAN Bus Nodes are control units connected to the power systems CAN bus.
They have a rugged sealed-plastic design, with DIN-rail or Velcro tabs as standard
mounting options.
When the CAN bus address is configured and the unit connected to the bus, it will
automatically communicate with the power systems controller (plug and play).
Configure then the CAN node functionality from the controllers front or its web-
based interface or via PowerSuite.

Battery Monitor CAN Node

The Battery Monitor CAN Bus Node enables you to decentralize or increase the
number of battery symmetry measurements in your DC power supply system.
Also, it monitors the battery compartment temperature (using the built-in sen-
sor), the battery fuse (with a fuse monitoring input) and the battery current (via a
current sense input).
WARNING! Fasten the Battery Monitor in the middle of the battery compartment. For exact measurements,
attach the monitor on the front of a battery block. If not possible, you can fix it on the side of the outer battery
block, or on top, or on the cabinets inner side wall.
The system raises alarms based on the Battery Monitor reporting the highest temperature, if several connected.
