Cast steel china has better mechanical properties than cast iron, but its

casting performance is worse than cast iron. Because cast steel has

higher melting point, poor flowability, large shrinkage rate and its liquid

is easy to oxidize, 10 ~ 14% body shrinkage rate, 1.8 ~ 2.5% line shrinkage

rate. To avoid misrun, cold lap, sinkhole, shrinkage porosity, crack, sticky
sand, and other defects, it must be taken more complex process

measures than cast iron.

First is to prevent cool lap and misrun. The wall of steel castings can not

be less than 8mm due to bad flowability of cast steel; the pouring system

structure should be simple as possible and its cross-section area size is

larger than cast iron; the dry/hot pattern is adoptable;

It need to raise the temperature of pouring, generally 1520 c ~ 1600

cto improve the flowability of cast steel because cast steel can exist in

liquid form due to longer overheating time. However, extra pouring

temperature will cause thick and big crystal grain, hot crack, bubble hole,

sticky sand, etc. Therefore, tiny ,wall-thin and complex castings, their

pouring temperature is 150c higher than cast steels melting point

while for large and wall-thick castings, their pouring temperature is

100Cthan the melting point of cast steel.

Second is to prevent shrinkage porosity, shrinkage holes. Due to worse

shrinkage of cast steel than cast iron, dead head, cold iron and subsidies

and other measures should be taken to achieve progressive

solidification.

In addition, in order to prevent the steel castings from shrinkage,

shrinkage, pores and cracks, its wall thickness should be uniform to avoid
sharp and right angle structure. In the sand of mold, the sawdust should

be added and in the mould core, coke should be added. Hollow core or

oil core is adoptable to improve the concession and permeability of sand

mold and mold core.

castings should be made with dry or quick-dry cast mould, such as CO2

-hardened water glass sand type of sand mould.
