When you save this document in your Capstone Google shared folder, you are required to
name this as Annotated entry #__ so that it is clear which entry this is and to ensure that it
is easy to find at a later stage in this process. Be sure that you leave a blank copy of this
template in your Google shared folder template file so that you have it available for the next
entries.

Two annotated entries are provided in this template for the two required sources due each time
annotated bibliography entries are due.

Women in Tech: The Missing Force

Citation:
You are encouraged to use EasyBib to house your citations and then copy and paste from the site. Its
easy and they guarantee that you format correctly. The EasyBib site will default, depending on subject
area you identified when you set up your bibliography page, to either MLA or APA (or other formatting
systems). You should manually select either MLA or APA if you dont like the particular formatting that
EasyBib established and use it consistently.

If you are citing a website, you MUST include the URL (despite what EasyBib will generate and/or
Purdue OWL says).

Evaluatingthesource
Before you spend time reading the source, put your source through this brief test and determine whether its worth
using and documenting as part of your research. We are using a customized version of the CRAAP (an acronym for
Currency-Relevance-Authority- Accuracy-Purpose) test, designed by California State University at Chicos Meriam
Library.

Put an x (as appropriate) in relevant spaces.

b) -What new ideas did you get that extended or broadened your thinking in new directions?

I am very interested in the cautionary tales mentioned in the article, which tell stories of times
things in the tech industry went wrong because women were not involved. I think these would be
interesting to look into and include in my presentation. It also gave me more ideas about how to
encourage girls to go into computer science, through examples such as Harvey Mudd and
Carnegie Mellon, and also pointed out all of the opportunities that girls have that are not well
known, that I would like to bring to light. It also explained the impact of this issue on patents,
which is something I had not previously thought about.

d) Can you provide at least two quotes and/or statistical information from your source that you think
might prove helpful and/or relevant to your project?

According to the National Center for Women and Information

Technology (NCWIT), by 2022 US companies report that theyll
need 1.2M more trained computer scientists. That number
includes new and replacement jobs. Assuming todays
graduation rates stay the same, only 39% of these jobs will be
filled by US-trained computer scientists. (Source)

NCWIT published a study showing that teams comprised of men

and women produced the most frequently cited software
patentswith citation rates that were 26% higher than the norm
for similar patents.

b) -What new ideas did you get that extended or broadened your thinking in new directions?

I thought it was really interesting to find out how women are more cautious, not just in computer
science, but across all aspects, regardless of their ability. This is something I realized I have
noticed, after this talk pointed it out. I think that this is something that I need to mention in my
presentation, so that girls everywhere can feel more confident and outgoing with their abilities.
This will result in higher enrollment in computer science if women are more confident and ready
to try new things, without being held back by the notion that everything they do has to be perfect.

. An HP report found that men will apply for a job if they meet only 60 percent of the
qualifications, but women, women will apply only if they meet 100 percent of the qualifications.
100 percent.

Yeah. So in 2012, we taught 20 girls. This year we'll teach 40,000 in all 50 states.

11:15And that number is really powerful, because last year we only graduated 7,500 women in
computer science. Like, the problem is so bad that we can make that type of change quickly.
