2010 SECTION VIII — DIVISION 1 (2) any other elongated indication on the radiograph which has length greater than: (a) % in, (6 mm) for ¢ up to % in, (19 mm) (6) efor ¢ from %, in, (19 mm) to 2'4 in, (57 mm) (c} % in. (19 mm) for over 2% in, (57 mm) where t the thickness of the weld excluding any allowable reinforcement, For a butt weld joining two mem bers having different thicknesses at the weld, ¢ is the thinner of these two thicknesses, Ifa full penetration weld includes a fillet weld, the thick- ress of the throat of the fillet shall be included in. (3) any group of aligned indications that have an aggregate length greater than ¢ in a length of 12t, except when the distance between the successive imperfections exceeds GL where Lis the length of the longest imperfection in the group: (4) rounded indications in excess of that specified by the acceptance standards given in Appendix 4, UW-52__ SPOT EXAMINATION OF WELDED. JOINTS NOTE: Spotratiographing fa welded jonisecognzed asaneffesive Inspection tool. The spt radiography rules ae also considered to bean ‘4 wo quality contol Spt radiographs made dec after & welder ot ‘operator has completed aunt of weld proves tit the work no ot being done in accordance with satisfactory process Hf he work isunsatistactory, cometivesteps can then be taken improve the welding in the subsequent unis, which unquesocaby wll improve the weld ‘aly. Spot radiograpy in accontance with these rls will not ensure a {abrcation produto predetermined quality lve hobghout. rst be realized tat an accepted vessel under these spo ridography rules may sul eontsn defects which might be csclosed on further enantio. If all radiographically disclosed weld defects must be eliminated from 3 vessel, then 100% radiography mst be erployed (a) Butt welded joints which are to be spot radiographed shall be examined locally as provided herein. (®) Minis Extent of Spot Radiographic Examination (Z) One spot shall be examined on each vessel for each 50 ft (15 m) increment of weld or fraction thereof for which a joint efficiency from column (b) of Table UW- |2is selected. However, for identical vessels or parts, each with less than $0 f (15 m) of weld for which a joint efficiency from column (b) of Table UW-12 is selected, 50 fe (15 m) increments of weld may be represented by ‘one spot examination (2) For each increment of weld to be examined, a sufficient number of spot radiographs shall be taken to examine the welding of each welder or welding operator. Under conditions where two or more welders or welding ‘operators make weld layers in a joint, oF on the two sides 149 p52) of a double-welded butt joint, one spot may represent Work of all welders or welding operators (3) Each spot examination shall be made as soon 4s practicable after completion of the increment of weld fo >be examined. The location of the spot shall be chosen py the Inspector after completion of the increment of welding to be examined, except that when the Inspector has notified in advance and cannot be present oF otifrwise ‘make the selection, the Manufacturer may exercise fis own judgment in selecting the spots (4) Radiographs requited at specific locatigns to sat- isfy the rules of other paragraphs, such as UW-11(@)(5)(), and UW-14(b), shall not be the requirements for spot radiography. (0) Standards for Spot Radiographic Ex ‘examination by radiography shall be ms ‘with the technique prescribed in UW-5 length of spot radiograph shall be 6 in?Spot radiographs ‘may be retained or be discarded by the Manufacturer after ‘acceptance of the vessel by the Inspector. The acceptability ‘of welds examined by spot radiography shall be judged by the following standards: (J) Welds in which indications are characterized as cracks or zones of incomplete fusion or penetration shall be unacceptable, (2) Welds having indications characterized as slag inclusions or cavities are unacceptable when the indication length exceeds %t, where f is defined as shown in ‘UW-51(b)(2). For all thicknesses, indications less than % in. (6 mm) ate acceptable, and indications greater than % in. (19 mm) are unacceptable. Multiple aligned indica- tions meeting these acceptance criteria are acceptable when the sum of their longest dimensions indications does not exceed 1 within a length of 6 (or proportionally for radio- ‘graphs shorter than 61), and when the longest Iength L for teach indication is separated by a distance not less than 32. from adjacent indications, (3) Rounded indications are nota factor in the accept- ability of welds not required ( be fully radiographed. (d) Evaluation and Retests (1) When a spot, radiographed as required in (b)(1) (or (b\(2) above, is acceptable in accordance with (c)(1) and (©)(2) above, the entire weld increment represented by this radiograph is acceptable, (2) When a spot, radiographed as required in (b)(1) or (b)(2) above, has been examined and the radiograph discloses welding which does not comply with the mini- mum quality requirements of (¢)(1) or (€)(2) above, two ‘additional spots shall be radiographically examined in the ‘same weld increment at locations away from the criginal spot. The locations of these additional spots shall be deter- ‘mined by the Inspector or fabricator as provided for the original spot examination in (b)(3) above.
