It is present in diaphragma sellae it is paired sinus
it is known as cavernous because it looks like sponge Extent - Anterior – from superior orbital fissure up to posterior part temporal bone near foramen lacerum it is situated in middle cranial fossa Cavernous sinus has got lateral, medial, wall & roof & floor Roof - it is related to optic nerve & internal carotid artery Floor - it is related to sphenoidal air sinuses Lateral wall – in there are 1. Trochlear nerve 2. Oculomotor nerve 3. Ophthalmic nerve 4. Maxillary branch of 5th nerve Mandibular nerve is not related to medial wall It has two structures 1. Abducent nerve 2. Internal carotid artery Tributaries of cavernous sinus 1. Cavernous sinus receives ophthalmic vein 2. Branch of vein of face – ie branch for lower part of nose & upper lip this part of face is known as dangerous area of face 3. It receives tributaries from brain 4. It is connected with cavernous sinus of opposite side 5. It also gives branches to bigger sinuses 6. It drains the sigmoid sinus & internal jugular vein Factors helps in movements of blood in cavernous sinus - the pulsation of internal jugular vein helps in movements of blood with in cavernous venous sinus Importance of cavernous sinus 1. Cavernous sinus related to all the nerves which supplies the muscles of eye ball 2. It is related to pituitary gland Applied anatomy 1. Any infection to cavernous sinus involves the nerves of orbit leads to problems of movements of eyeball 2. Infection of cavernous sinus treated carefully 3. Veins from dangerous area of face are directly connected to sinus
