ARCHITECTURE IN WATER
INTRODUCTION:
As life has evolved in water, mankind elementarily and inseparably connected to water. Water
is very important factor for human life and growth. Human body itself consists of 75% of water.
Architecture in water is the study of structures that can be constructed in and on water.
Analysing the construction of forts amidst water and underwater tunnels in history concludes
that these ideas have always invited man to explore the idea of habitat. In present context
under water and on water construction is very trending which enables the use of new
technologies in the field of construction.
Some examples The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai ; Hydropolis, Dubai; Floating island, South
Korea.

AIM:-

To study the types of structure that can be built within water or amidst water and
study their construction processes and understanding the needs, advantages and limitations.
To study in detail the famous structures that already exist

OBJECTIVE:-

Firstly, brief understanding of what is is architecture in water.

Study its history and evolution.
Understanding the need of architecture in water in detail.
Its relevance with current context of Architecture.
Brief understanding the various sub types of Architecture in water.
Detailed study of one of its type.
Literature study of the related structures.
Understanding its methods of construction.
Detailed study of every aspect.
Arriving to conclusion.

NEED

Over the years man has been trying to explore new frontiers of living.

After utilizing earth to its utmost level problems like pollution, scarcity of land, etc.
have forced man to look for new explore new avenues of settlement.

Usable land in urban area will be scarcer due to continuous expanding development.

People like to live and enjoy leisure activities near or on water according to the
improvement of income level.
After exploring all the ways to utilize land in its utmost level, architects started
exploring the possibility of submerged, semi submerged and floating structures.

As there are few obstacles on the lake or sea, buildings can use solar energy, wind
power and temperature of water with ease.

Architects were even successful in their ideas and execution to build structures on
water and under water.

With the new techniques and technologies and study of aquatic life and nature of
water, architecture in water is feasible.

SCOPE:-

The research will include the brief study of the different types of architectures possible in
water and the technologies used in them.

TYPES OF ARCHITECTURE IN WATER

ON WATER:- IN WATER:-
1) FLOATING STRUCTURES 1)SEMI-SUMERGED

2)STRUCTURES WITH HABITABLE 2)FULLY SUBMERGED

SPACES ABOVE WATER
ON WATER:-

1) FLOATING ARCHITECTURE:-
It consists of various structures such as floating bridges, floating houses, floating
roads which are kept afloat on the surface of water using various techniques and
structural mechanisms.
For eg. :-Four Seasons hotel, Australia

2) STURCTURES WITH HABITABLE SPACES ABOVE WATER:-

It consists of structures in which the main habitable area is on the water surface but
the supporting foundations are submerged in water. Projects of various scales have
been covered under this type.
For eg. :- City of Venice ;Palm Jumeriah, Dubai etc.

IN WATER:-

1) SEMI-SUBMERGED :-
It consists of structures in which major habitable space is under water and the rest
is above water which cater to the various services like lighting, ventilation, etc.
There are special mechanisms and techniques involved to keep the structures
submerged.
For eg:- Floating seashore villa, Dubai; Trilobis 65

2) FULLY SUBMERGED :-
It consists of structures that are fully submerged in water. It includes structures
such as tunnels, recreational spaces, aquariums, etc. It uses special mechanisms
for ventilation, lighting and other services.
For eg:- Hotel Hyropolis in Dubai.

My research will include a brief study of all the types of structures built in and on water and
the technogies used in the process of construction. But a detailed study of only structures on
the surface of water will be included. It will also include literature studies of various
structures for better understanding.

LIMITATIONS:-

My research will not include the detailed study of structures under water and their design
techniques and processes.

METHODOLOGY:-
The methodology that will be used for the research will be obtaining data from books,
internet, research papers, magazines, literature study and case study under the guidance of my
teachers.

CONCLUSION:-
The output of the following research will be a better understanding of this field of
architecture so that further the knowledge can be applied in design concepts and design
process.
