Nine Dwindling Cables

Nine Dwindling Cables is a slouchy cabled beret shaped by decreases hidden in the cable
crossings and featuring a horizontal ribbed band for a firm yet flexible fit. The ends of the
band taper and overlap to create an elegant finishing touch.

Size: Women's medium; to fit 56cm head

circumference. Crown height of hat (= length
of cable) will be approximately 21cm.

Materials:
Approximately 130g of doubleknit
(worsted) weight merino yarn (c.
100m/50g)
2.5mm circular needle or set of 2.5mm
DPNs
5mm circular needle (if working Magic
Loop) or set of 5mm DPNs, or size to
obtain gauge

Gauge: 18 sts and 28 rows = 10cm x 10cm on

5mm needles

Abbreviations:
co: cast on
sl: slip
k: knit
p: purl
wyf: with yarn in front

Band:
With 2.5mm needles, co 2 sts.
1st row: sl 1 purlwise wyf, k1.

Work Band Beginning chart.

Repeat rows 25 & 26 of Band Beginning chart until work measures 50cm from cast-on.
Work Band Ending chart.

Set up for hat crown

The next thing is to pick up stitches along the side of the band. On the long side of the
band that contains the increases and decreases (see photo), use pins to mark off 1st 50cm,
then divide these 50cm into quarters to help distribute stitches evenly.

Use 2.5mm needles to pick up and knit 153 sts
evenly along the 50cm section you've marked with
pins.

NB: Do not pick up any stitches past the point where

the band begins to taper (the section that was
worked according to the Band Beginning chart).
We're going to leave that part of the band flapping
loose for now and sew it in place during finishing.

Hat crown
Using 5mm needles, join to begin working in the
round, and work Cable Base chart. (The chart
repeats nine times in the round.)

Note: The amount of slouch in your hat will be

influenced by the overall length of the cable. For a more
closely fitting hat, omit the first 8 rounds of the Cable
Base chart and begin in round 9. At this stage the cable
hasn't begun dwindling yet, so you can do this without
throwing off your stitch count.

After completing round 28 of Cable Base chart, start shaping the Dwindling Cable as
follows:

Rd 29: *p1, slip 5 onto cable needle behind work, k5; k2 k2tog k1 from cable
needle; k5, p1* repeat to end of round.
Rds 30-34: *p1 k14 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 35: *p1, k5, slip4 onto cable needle in front of work; k2 k2tog k1; k4 from
cable needle, p1* repeat to end of rd.
Rds 36-40: *p1 k13 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 41: *p1, slip 5 sts onto cable needle behind work; k4, k2 k2tog k1 on cable
needle; k4, p1* repeat to end of rd.
Rd. 42-46: *p1 k12 p1* repeat to end.
Rd. 47: *p1, k4, slip 4 to cable needle in front of work; k1 k2tog k1; k4 from
cable needle; p1* repeat to end of rd.
Rds 48-50: *p1 k11 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 51: *p1, slip 4 to cable needle behind work, k3; k1 k2tog k1 from cable
needle; k4, p1* repeat to end.
Rds 52-54: *p1 k10 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 55: *p1, k3; slip 3 to cable needle in front of work; k1 k2tog k1; k3 from
cable needle, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 56: *p1 k9 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 57: *p1, k4 k2tog k3, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 58: *p1, k2tog k6, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 59: *p1, slip 3 to cable needle behind work; k2; k2tog k1 on cable needle;
k2, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 60: *p1, k2 k2tog k2, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 61: *p1, k3 k2tog, p1* repeat to end.
Rd 62: p1, *k1, slip 2 to cable needle in front of work, k1, k2 from cable
needle, p2tog* repeat to 1 st rem, p tog last stitch of rd with the purl
st at beg of next rd.
Rd 63: *ssk k2 p1* repeat to end.
Rd 64: *sl 2 sts simultaneously knitwise, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over (=
centred double decrease), p1* repeat to end. 18 sts rem.
Rd 65: k2tog to end. 9 sts rem.

Finishing
Cut yarn, leaving a long enough tail for weaving in
the end, thread through the remaining 9 stitches,
and pull tight. Weave in ends. Pin the loose end of
the band to the top inside edge of the band and sew
in place. Wash and lightly block hat by laying flat as
shown in photographs on page 1 and pulling gently
into shape. Allow to dry. Wear and enjoy!
