Case 2055-2
Pneumatic Testing of Pressure Vessels, UG-20
Section VIII, Division 1

Inquiry: Under what conditions may pressure vessels,

fabricated under the provisions of Section VIII, Division
1, be tested pneumatically in lieu of the hydrostatic
test set forth in UG-20(f)(2)?

Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that pneumatic

test provisions of UG-100 and the requirements of UG-
20(f) may be used provided the following additional
requirements are met:
(a) The test pressure is at least 1.3 MAWP but shall
not exceed 1.3 times the basis for calculated test
pressure defined in Appendix 3-2;
(b) The MAWP is no greater than 500 psi;
(c) The following thickness limitations shall apply:
(1) For butt joints, the nominal thickness at the
thickest welded joint shall not exceed 12 in.
(2) For corner or lap welded joints, the thinner
of the two parts joined shall not exceed 12 in.
(d) This Case number shall be shown on the Manufac-
turers Data Report.
CAUTIONARY NOTE: The vessel(s) should be tested in such a
manner as to ensure personnel safety from a release of the total
energy of the vessel(s).
