What is landscape architecture?
The ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) defines Landscape Architecture:
Landscape architecture is the profession which applies artistic and scientific principles to the research,
planning, design and management of both natural and built environments. Practitioners of this profession
apply creative and technical skill and scientific, cultural and political knowledge in the planned
arrangement of natural and constructed elements on the land with a concern for the stewardship and
conservation of natural, constructed and human resources. The resulting environments shall serve
useful, aesthetic, safe and enjoyable purposes.
Landscape architecture covers a wide range, perhaps best understood by the professions goal: achieving
a balance between the built and natural environments. It requires a multidisciplinary approach involving
environmental science, art, ecology, and much more, leading to extraordinary results: restoring
endangered wetlands, reducing hospital stays, securing government and other buildings, removing toxins
from rainwater.

Hardscape & Softscape
There are two main components in landscape design. These two parts are Softscape and Hardscape.
Hardscape are design elements that are solid and unchanging as the years go by. Softscape are elements that
are fluid and changing as they mature. The ideal landscape is a balance of both hardscape and softscape.
Hardscape refers to the solid, hard elements in landscape design that stay the same for years. Some examples
of hardscape are rocks, walkways, retaining walls, paver patios, outdoor kitchens, water features, decks and
driveways.
Softscape is unlike hardscaping in that it doesnt have that long-term or permanent quality. It is the living
animated part of a landscape. Softscape comprises the other elements such as soil, plants, shrubs, trees,
flowers, vegetables, vines, turf and color schemes.

What is a landscape architect?
Landscape architects create the landscapes and plan, design and manage open spaces including both
natural and built environments. Their work provides innovative and aesthetically-pleasing environments for
people to enjoy, while ensuring that changes to the natural environment are appropriate, sensitive and
sustainable. Collaborating closely with other professionals, they work on a diverse range of projects in both
urban and rural settings. From parks, gardens and housing estates to city-center design, sporting sites and
motorway construction.
The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) defines the landscape architect as one whom:
Plants and designs the aesthetic layout of land areas for such projects as parks and other recreational
facilities, roads, commercial, industrial and residential sites and public buildings: consults with clients,
engineers and architects on overall programme; studies site conditions such as nature of soil vegetation, rock
features, drainage and location of buildings; designs landscape, harmonizing improvements with existing land
features and buildings and proposed structures; prepares working drawings, specifications and cost estimates
for landscaping, including vegetation to be planted and other related site development work; supervises
landscaping to ensure that work is carried out according to specifications. The Landscape Architect may
specialize in a particular type of landscape architecture such as parks landscaping.
Foreign landscape architect
Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe
Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (8 October 1900 17 July 1996) was an English architect, town planner, landscape
architect, garden designer, lecturer and author. His strongest interest was in landscape and garden design.
Jellicoe was born in Chelsea, London. He studied at the Architectural Association in London in 1919 and won a
British Prix de Rome for Architecture in 1923, which enabled him to research his first book Italian Gardens of
the Renaissance with John C. Shepherd. This pioneering study did much to re-awaken interest in this great
period of landscape design and through its copious photographic illustrations publicized the then perilously
decayed condition of many of the gardens.
In 1929 he was a founding member of the Landscape Institute and from 1939 to 1949 he was its President. In
1948, he became the founding President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA). From
1954 to 1968 he was a member of Royal Fine Art Commission and from 1967 to 1974 a Trustee of Tate Gallery.
