1 Chapter Tour Through History

History textbooks seem crammed with so many facts: names, dates, places, and events.
This Chapter Tour is meant to help you see beyond all those facts: to identify the
essential thinking like a historian themes (cause/effect, change, turning points,
through their eyes, using the past). A Chapter Tour can help you uncover historical
ideas and is a survey (not about the details). It is meant to help you ask What is the
point of all of this? To get the big picture of a chapter, lets take a tour of the text first!
Remember, this is an initial sweep through of the chapter, it is NOT meant to be
comprehensive.

Surveying a Chapter/Section Before Reading

1. What is the title of the section? Just looking at the title, what do you already know
about it? What do you predict you should know after reading the chapter?

2. Main Idea: Looking at the beginning of 17.1 (pg. 320), there is a header that says
It Matters Because. From the description in the paragraph, what are the main
themes in 17.1? What does this indicate about 17.1?

3. 17.1 begins with an Essential Question (Blue ribbon at the top of pg. 320) that
the chapter will address. How does this question focus on the historical theme of
cause/effect?

4. 17.1 has 4 sections, each with a smaller section within, indicated by large red
letters. List the 4 big sections below. Look at the keywords in their title: what clues
are given about the section? What do you think this section will be about?
5. There are 3 pictures in 17.1 Choose one for a closer examination.

Write down one thing you already know connected to this picture.

What change or problems are shown or represented in the picture?

As a historian, what is something that you wonder when looking at this

picture?

6. There is a map on pg. 325. What is its title? What do the colors on the map
represent?

7. Each of the 4 sections has a Guiding Question. For each section, brainstorm
below what you will be expected to know after reading the section.
