Introduction

Students Name: Daniel and Andrei

Type of Project (experiment, innovation, study): Innovation

The Name is: Horizon

Focus Question: In what way could Horizon Canadian Military Drone

improve the performance of security and defence in combat war
zones?

Other Related Questions I have: Why is a drone needed in the

military? Why is this drone better than the drone that exists already in
the military? What security does the drone offer the military? What
information does the drone collect while surveying land and villages?
Is it possible to make a daytime and night-time version of the drone?
How much money would the drone cost the military?

How I plan to answer this/these question(s): Research military drones

that already exist, research different types of aircrafts, research
different types of drones, research military surveillance, research how
to build the drone.

Scientific concepts I am including (if any then list and define them):
flight and aviation.
Hypothesis

We think that in our project our product will hover as a blimp and it
will move as fast as a normal drone. The aircraft will have a longer
battery life than a normal drone (one hour). The aircraft will have to be
charged up at the beginning. The drone will vertically lift up from a
platform. The aircraft will have to be calibrated before flight so the
aircraft does not tip over. The aircraft will soar for about one hour or
less till the aircraft will have to land and recharge.

Background

A blimp is a airship lighter than air that has engines to power it and
does not get carried by the wind. The first blimp ever built was in 1852
by Henri Giffard. The blimp was powered by a 3-horsepower steam
engine. The first blimp to have a rigid structure made from metal was
made by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. It had hydrogen-gas-filled
rubber bags. The most famous zeppelin was the Hindenburg that had
crashed when a fire was started on board in 1937. A blimp is a non
rigid (only the balloon) airship that was used by Goodyear and many
others as advertizing purposes and as military purposes like
anti-submarine warfare or surveillance. The RC blimps are a cheap
way for reconnaissance which can be used as a long term
surveillance drone that can stay in one spot and film anything. These
drones can film a target and get out pretty quickly and can take shots.
Blimps can be a good way to film the target when camouflaged and
hidden from enemy sight plus they could hold a lot of weight if
needed.
Materials

Prototype materials:

Helium balloons
Drone
glue gun
wires
masking tape/glue
camera
Procedure

Step one is to have eight helium balloons. Step two - attach them
together. Step three it was to make the modified drone to put it under
the structure with balloons. Step four - calibrate the drone. Ready to
flight.

Observations

We needed a bigger budget for building the drone fully functional. The
drone did not fly because it indeed has 5-10 grams more weight to
take off . The drone need more balloons to fly.

Analysis

The results are that the we are needed for a bigger budget to make
this drone fully functional. We did not happen as we thought in the
hypothesis since the drone itself was too heavy. We need to work on
getting the blimp lighter and have more balloons added to at. If we
would have a bigger budget, we could buy a custom balloon and a
hydrogen tank, so that the drone would work better.
