Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

Good morning students! I know last week you talked some about main idea 10 minutes
and supporting details.
Who can tell me one thing you learned?
Who can tell me what main idea means?
1. Focus and Review
Who can tell me what a supporting detail is?

I will then create an anchor chart on Main Idea that includes a variety of
different ways to determine the main idea of a passage.
2. Statement of Objective Students today we will be discussing the Main Idea of a passage and 10 minutes
for Student determine the supporting details of a main idea.
To begin this portion of the lesson I will provide each student with a passage
titled The Bee Hive.
I will first read the directions that are provided at the top of the paper to set the
expectations of the assignment. Then the students and I will read through the
passage together as a class. After we have read through the passage one time I
will use the graphic organizer The Ice Cream Cone as a way to determine the
main idea/supporting details. I will show the class that the ice cream scoops act
as the supporting details of the passage and the cone is the overall main idea of
the passage. I will then tell the students that the more ice cream scoops the
3. Teacher Input better the total ice cream cone will be. In this case we are finding three
supporting details and I will ask students to give me three supporting details of
the passage. Once we have found all three supporting details we will move on
to the cone or main idea. I will explain to the students that the main idea is
basically all the supporting details put into one main sentence that describes
the overall passage in just one sentence. I will ask students what they think
the main idea of the passage is and I will fill in the graphic organizer on the
board. After we have completed the assignment I will read back over the
passage, supporting details, and main idea we have determined to give the
students clarification.
I will give students instruction before any materials are passed out. 10 minutes
I will instruct the students that they will be getting into partners at their table
groups in order to complete the two passages that will be handed out to them
(The Storm and Climbing Mount Everest) I will then present the two
4. Guided Practice passages to the class and read the directions on each of them to the whole class
before providing them with their own. Once clear expectations and instructions
have been given I will then ask the teacher helpers to pass out the materials to
each student. I will allow time for the students to work together. I will then
bring the class back to a discussion and we will discuss the passage and
answers that the students will give.
I will then provide students with directions on the independent activity that 10 minutes
they will be completing. I will fully read all of the directions to the students
and make sure that the expectations are understood. I will instruct students that
they have 10 minutes to read over each passage and determine the main idea of
each passage using the multiple choice answers. I will also instruct students
5. Independent Practice
that they are to underline TWO supporting details from the passage provided
that support the main idea they have chosen. I will then tell the students after
you are finished you will raise your hand and I will collect your assignment.
After I have collected your assignment you will go into your independent
reading.
Formative: I will walk around the classroom and ask questions such as
1. What is one supporting detail of this passage?
2. How do you know that is a supporting detail?
3. How did you determine the main idea of this passage?
6. Assessment Methods of
all objectives/skills:
Summative: With the activity that was distributed during independent practice
students will complete the activity independently. The students will have to answer
one multiple choice questions per passage and underline two supporting details in
each passage. I will then collect this assignment for grading. Students must complete
two out of the three passages completely correct in order to have mastery of this
standard.

Today we have learned about the main idea of a piece of writing and how to 1 minute
determine that main idea using supporting details from the writing. Finding the
7. Closure
main idea of a passage will help us better to understand pieces of writing and
understand concepts fully.

8. Assessment Results of
all objectives/skills:
