and show respect to their opponent. (2 mins)

*Differentiation: For some students in the class the coordination to make contact
with the birdie is a very challenging task. This can be very discouraging and it is
important to acknowledge the growth in these students and provide individualized
opportunities for growth.

- Birdie with balloon attached.

Learning Activities/Teaching Strategies (35 mins)

1. Cooperative Rally Warm Up (LO 1, 2 & 3) (15 mins) Observation of clears:

- With a partner you are going to cooperative rally which is one of
the activities we did at the end of class yesterday.
- The rally will start with a serve; from the service line, beyond the
short service line; while your partner is in ready position. ( Feet apart,
knees bent and racket up)
- Progression: Clears
- Direct instruction of how the clear will be performed. Remind
students of stance and proper grip.
- Ready position- Step Back- Scratch your back-
contact at highest point and follow through.
- Send your partner as far back as your can;
aiming towards the back third of the court.
*Smaller racket and birdie with balloon together will ensure more successful
contacts.
Observation of footwork:
2. Around the World (LO 1,2, & 3) (15 mins)
- Merge the partners on each court together
- Start with a serve and rally. However after each contact you go to
the back of the line on your side of the court.
- This will be an ongoing rally. If the shuttle drops, that person may
reserve to start the next rally.

- Do a demonstration and merge each court into groups of roughly

6.
- Progression: Elimination round: If you lose the
point; shuttle goes out of bounds, or you do not get it over the net
then you have to step off the court while the game continues.
Each side you are trying to have one person standing the longest.
At the end of the game then every goes back in and start again.
- When students are eliminated
they are to do jumping jacks or squats along the wall
until the next game begins.
- Keep in mind that badminton has a heavy focus
on etiquette and fair play. So when you are refereeing your own
game to be respectful of your opponents.
- Ensure students understand this game as it will
be played on Friday with 3 classes in the gym at the same time.
*Offer the student the opportunity to work individually on serves and contacts
against the wall during this activity. Provide this as an open option should they
choose it.

3. Drop Shot (Time Permitting)

- This is a mini game played within the first third of the court.
Your court is going to be within the short service line. You may have one
foot out and one foot in the short service line.
- You are going to be working on drop shot recovery, which are
shots that barely make it over the net and drop before the service line.
- You want to just place your racket underneath the birdie as it
comes over. You want to play it higher upon the net so you have more
control and a lighter tap.
- Progression: Once students have the basics of
drop shot down, bring it back to full court rally but encourage
them to make their partner's move. Drop shot, then clear.

Closure/Cool Down (2mins)

Transition: Have students put rackets away and quickly huddle up.
Give students feedback on the lesson and share with them what the personal artifact
this week means to me. Send them to go get changed.
