Prayer gets Mustangs ready for battle

It is a group of sentences
Eldon players have come
to know by heart.
Every single Friday night,
just before the coin toss
and the proceeding kick-
off, the team huddles near
midfield and recites a prayer
to get ready for the battle
ahead. One player leads the
prayer and his voice is
strongly echoed by his sur-
rounding teammates as he
says the following:
Dear Lord,
The battles we go through
life, we ask for a chance
thats fair, a chance to equal
our stride, a chance to do or
dare. If we should win, let it
be by the code, faith and
honor held high. If we
should lose, well stand by
the road and cheer as the
winners go by. Day by day,
we get better and better! Til
we cant be beat, wont be
beat.
Eldon senior offensive

Jasey Brandt said the prayer
means so much more than
just having a few words to
say.
We just think of the
brotherhood that we have,
playing with sportsmanship
and what we know that we
need to do, the senior said.
Day by day we get better
and better- we believe that
and we play harder every-
day so we can get better. It
means a lot to us when we
do it. We take it seriously
and mean every word we
say.
Eldon coach Shannon
Jolley said this tradition be-
gan about four or five years
ago, but he and his coaching
staff had nothing to do with
it and he prefers it that way
because everything should
be spontaneous.
Im always for and sup-
porting things that are
spontaneous, the coach
stated. I felt like that was
something our kids grabbed
ahold of no matter where
they have seen it and it was
just a spontaneous effort
for them to show unity It
was just exciting for me to
see our kids come together
and do something.
It is a tradition, not unlike
other traditions many oth-
er high school teams have
getting ready for a game.
However, what may make
Jolley most proud of it is the
fact that every year there is
a new player that steps up
and leads the team in the
prayer.
The more impressive
part is each year some oth-
er player on our team has
stepped up to lead that so
that kind of lets me know
the longevity of that and
the kids enjoy it, the coach

In the first game of the
2016 season it was Brandt
who led the prayer, but af-
ter suffering a knee injury
early in the year his sopho-
more brother Dawson
Brandt has stepped up to fill
that role. Brandt said that
bodes well for the rest of the
young quarterback and de-
fensive backs career as a
Mustang.
He just kind of took over
it and it makes me see that

a leader and he is going to
do some great things the
rest of the season and
throughout his career,

School of the Osage which will be competing for a trip to the
district title game on November 4. Awaiting either team will
be top-seeded Owensville who is undefeated so far this year
at 10-0 or a Sullivan team that is currently 5-5. Should Eldon
advance, it will be the Mustangs first trip to the district
championship game since 2013. If the night belongs to
Osage, the Indians will be competing for their first district
title game since 2014.

Versailles Scenes of the Season

Ayden Easton
Senior OL/DL
Measuring at 6-foot-3 and 275
pounds, Easton is certainly not an
easy man to get through and it has
been evident with the Tiger offense
averaging nearly four yards per
carry. Easton has also made his
presence known defensively finish-
ing the regular season portion of his
senior campaign with 12 registered
tackles including a tackle for a loss.

For the football players
of Versailles, gameday be-
gins at the breakfast table.
Every Friday morning
the players gather at
Lehmans Restaurant to
not only get in that first
meal of the day, but share
a sense of brotherhood by
coming together at the
dining table. It is a tradi-
tion shared only by the
players themselves as no
coaches are involved and
the upperclassmen pro-
vide rides for their
younger teammates who
may be unable to drive,
making sure they have a
way to get there. As the
team partakes in the meal,
they discuss the night
ahead and what it will
take to be successful when
they walk off the field.
Junior Chase Hyman
became a part of this tra-
dition a season ago when
he started playing foot-
ball as a sophomore and it
is a tradition he thor-
oughly enjoys.
I get six or seven fresh-
man in my car and we
show up, eat breakfast and
talk about the game this
week and the week be-
fore. We also make fun of
the coaches too, the jun-
ior said laughingly.
Versailles assistant foot-
ball coach Dusty Daniels is
quite familiar with the tra-
dition as well being a
2008 graduate of the
school and he said it was
great to see it has contin-
ued after leaving the halls
of his alma matter. Daniels
remembers many of those
Friday mornings and
could not think of a better
way to start a day.
It definitely gets you
and your body going and
you are not sleeping in
until the last minute, the
coach remarked. You are
eating together at a dinner

A pair of songs helping Osage
to stay in the win column

There are two songs the
School of the Osage football
team loves to hear every
Friday night.
The first song is the Last
of the Mohicans theme that
echoes throughout the sta-
dium just before the Indians
and opposing team meet at
the 50-yard line for the coin
toss. Osage coach Devin
Johnson said the song,
which has been played just
before kickoffs for the past
four or five years, serves as
a reminder and a realization
that their battle is about to
take place.
It is that final emotional
experience before the game
starts, the coach said. We
teach our guys that we want
to build throughout the pre-
game. We start the day nice
and mellow and continue to
build until 7 oclock. At 7
oclock you should be at that
optimal performance range
throughout the night.

comes on it just gets every-
body going and everybody
gets real hyped and pumped
up. It gets the intensity flow-
ing and everyone just gets in
the zone and gets real fo-
cused.
The second song only oc-
curs if the night goes well for
Osage when Neil Diamonds
Sweet Caroline is belted
out by players in the locker
room. However, Johnson
noted that it would not be as
easy to enjoy that experience
without the band and the
fans behind them giving
them some extra energy
throughout the game.
The band and the fans
are right behind us and we
have a big band that does a
great job, the coach noted.
That is where a lot of the
energy comes from that
whenever we are doing well
on the field, you start to
feel that build behind you
and all that momentum just
kind of carries over.
According to Riley, the
postgame song tradition be-
gan this year when Defen-
sive Coordinator Nathan
Dains approached the team
during practice one day with
the idea of having a song the
team could enjoy after wins
as he once did so with his
own high school team. After
some thinking took place,
Riley came up with Sweet
Caroline and the rest was
history.
I was thinking about
what song is kind of dumb,
but awesome and everyone
kind of knows it or at least
a few words of it, Riley re-
called. Sweet Caroline
popped into my mind, I told
the coaches and they were
all over it.
Johnson certainly does
not mind hearing both
songs.

their enjoyment of coming

Eldon (6-4) will meet for
Round 2 when the Mustangs
visit the Indians on Friday
night. Osage is hoping this
chapter of the rivalry will go
much like the first contest ear-
lier this season when they
defended home turf and
cruised to a 32-6 victory over
their Highway 54 neighbor.
Meanwhile, Eldon comes into
this matchup not only with a
healthier squad than the last
time these two sides met, but
plenty of momentum hav-
ing won their last two contests
by a combined score of 67 to
8. The stakes are obviously
higher this time around as the
winner gets to move on to the
district title game and the
loser will see their season
come to an abrupt end. One
thing for sure is that nobody
wants to go home so it truly
should be a battle when the
ball is kicked off at 7 p.m.
OSAGE KEYS
TO THE GAME
1) Stay sharp
The Indians did what they
needed to do to make sure
they were the team ahead
when the clock hit zero last
Friday night against St.
James, but the mistakes that
were made certainly did not
help. Osage has undoubted-
ly done many things right to
win all but one of their games
so far in 2016 and as long as
the team stays sharp on both
sides of the ball they may
very well continue getting to
play football for another week.
That will require protecting
the football while not com-
mitting too many penalties
and time will soon tell if the
Indians can refrain from dig-
ging their own internal hole.
2) Utilize the weapons
Part of Osages success in
2016 can be attributed to
how many different players
have been able to step up of-
fensively and become a threat
for opposing defenses.
Whether it is on the ground
or through the air, Osage has
had little trouble marching
downfield and moving the
chains. The Indians have had
five different players exceed
100 rushing yards or more so
far this season while junior
quarterback Zach Wheeler
has found just as many tar-
gets who have exceeded 100
receiving yards or more. As
one cohesive unit, the Indians
have put up 21 rushing touch-
downs complimented by 20
passing touchdowns so if the
team can continue to suc-
cessfully use both styles of at-
tack they should have little
trouble putting points on the
board Friday night with an of-
fense averaging 33.5 points
per game.
3) Disrupt the rhythm
One of the biggest goals for
Osages defensive unit will
be stopping the machine that
is Eldons running game and
forcing the Mustangs to go to
the air. However that task is
easier said than done with El-

will still need to stay on their

Pappys Hogs continue to feel the love at Camdenton

Pappy Pirch still vividly
remembers one of the first
days of practice in 1975
when former Laker coach
Bob Shore called for the
skill players and the line-
men to split up into
groups.
It was Shores first year
at the school and of the
roughly 33 players on the
field that day, 31 of them
started making their way
over to the skill position
group because nobody was
particularly excited about
the prospect of being a
lineman.
I had two stay with me, motivating factor and to
said Pirch, who served as
the teams offensive and
defensive line coach from
1973 to 2005. One was
hard of hearing and the
other guy was not paying
attention. I had to get peo-
ple enthused about being
a lineman.
That is exactly what the
former coach proceeded
to do as he spent the next
30 years of his career
making the unit a source
of pride and a staple of
Camdentons football tra-
dition. Shor, for one, was
certainly glad he did.
What a lot of coaches
will tell you is that the
game is played up front.
You need to control that
line of scrimmage and it
takes a special kind of per-
son to play there, the for-
mer coach noted. It is
such a vital cog of your
football team and if you
dont have lineman you
have problems. That was a

but motivate kids to want

Friday Night Standouts from week 10
Offense: Jay
Griffin
Although Camdenton
came up just short on
the scoreboard, junior
running back Jay
Griffin had no trouble
cutting and slashing
his way through the
West Plains defense
Friday night as he to-
taled 147 yards on the
ground to go with his
two touchdowns. In
the end, it proved to be
another solid year for
the junior who will be
eager for his senior
campaign after amass-
ing 1,242 rushing yards
and 18 touchdowns.
