Course Description
Welcome to 7th Grade Utah Studies. This semester we will be learning about the people, histories, cultures,
government and geography that make up the state of Utah. In this class we will learn about the importance of history and
how to think like historians. We will be expanding on the information you learned in 4th grade and connecting Utah
history to current community issues.

Classroom Expectations
Creating an environment where students are able to learn is the most important goal of this class. In order for this
to happen students will be expected to arrive on time and come prepared to learn. They will be be expected to follow all
school wide policies and procedures, which includes following the school dress code. Our classroom rules will be posted
in the classroom and all students will be expected to follow these rules. If these rules are not respected by certain
students, parents/guardians may be contacted.

Instructional Activities & Projects: Throughout the semester students will engage in a variety of activities which may
include:
Reading Historical Texts
Persuasive Essay Writing
Classroom Debates
Artistic Individual & Group Projects
We will occasionally use the textbook The Utah Journey, by Richard Holzapfel & Susan Meyers. Parents/guardians
please feel free to contact me if you would like to preview any of the materials we use in class.

Student Supplies: Students need to come to class prepared everyday. This means bringing a 3-ring binder with paper,
pencils, class handouts and their school issued iPad. Constant unpreparedness may result in the parent/guardian being
contacted.

Attendance: Good attendance is critical to students success in school. It also creates habits that will be helpful in our
students futures. If attendance becomes a problem then parents/guardians will be notified.

Timeliness: Students who are not in their seats when the bell rings will be considered tardy. Frequent tardies will result
in parents/guardians being notified.

Late Work: Assigned work is due at the date set by the teacher. Students will be given 3 free late assignments per
quarter. After you have used up your 3 free lates you may continue to turn in late work but it you can only receive 50% of
the original points. I will also announce a cut-off date at the end of each quarter. No late work will be accepted after
the cut-off date.

Absent Make-up Work: If a student misses class due to an excused absence then it is their responsibility to speak to me
and find out what work was missed. If a student was absent for 1 day then they will receive 1 extra day to completed their
assignment before it is considered late. If they missed 2 days of school then they will receive 2 extra days to complete
their assignments.
Electronic Devices
We will frequently utilize the school issued iPads during our lessons. Each student will be expected to follow the
guidelines they agreed to when they first got the iPads at the beginning of the year.
