Review/Lesson Preview
Instruction: Good day, eager young minds! You are about to embark a journey- a journey
about the nature of life. Lets retrace the development of one of the most important theory in
Biology, the Cell Theory. There may be obstacles ahead, but I know you can do it. Brace for
impact, as we first unlock the meaning of the following words.
1. Cell a. production of living things from nonliving
matter.
2. Organelle b. basic functional unit of life
3. Microscope c. specialized structure inside a cell
4. Omi cellula y cellula d. an instrument used to magnify the image of
an object
5. Spontaneous Generation e. all cells comes from pre-existing cells

Pre-printed Notes:
Sep 4, 1590
-Hans and Zacharias Janssen were the inventors of the first compound microscope.

Sep 4, 1665
English physicist Robert Hooke looked at a sliver of cork through a microscope lens and
noticed some "pores" or "cells" in it. Hooke was the first person to use the word "cell" to
identify microscopic structures when he was describing cork.

Sep 4, 1668
Francesco Redi, an Italian physician, did an experiment to determine if rotting meat turned
into flies. He found that meat cannot turn into flies and only flies could make more flies.

Sep 4, 1674
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek was the first to see and describe bacteria.

Sep 4, 1745
He claimed that there was a "life force" present in the molecules of all inorganic matter,
including air and the oxygen in it, that could cause spontaneous generation to occur.

Sep 4, 1765
He determined that soup in a sealed container was sterile and that micro organisms that
caused the soup to spoil had entered from the air.

Sep 5, 1831
Robert Brown
Robert Brown discovered the cell nucleus.

Sep 5, 1839
Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden created what is called the cell theory. The cell
theory states that all living things are made up of one or more cells.

Sep 5, 1839
discovered the cells, now known as Schwann cells, that form a sheath surrounding nerve
axons and conducted experiments that helped disprove the theory of spontaneous generation.

Sep 5, 1855
Rudolf Virchow published his now-famous aphorism omnis cellula e cellula. He also stated that
all diseases involve changes in normal cells.

Sep 4, 1864
Louis Pasteur

Day/Session 01

Louis Pasteur did an experiment that determined that soup exposed to air only spoiled if the
air was not filtered or if the flask containing the soup had an opening that allowed micro
organisms to get to the soup. If he used flasks with long S-shaped necks the micro organisms
that spoiled the soup settled in the neck and did not spoil the soup.
Developmental Activity
Instructions: Way to go! Kindly look to the picture below. It may seem odd, but the picture
below (1-2) is a pointillist style of painting. The image in the pointillist painting appears
continuous but if one looks closely, the images are actually made of small dots. Pointillism is a
method of painting using dots to come up with various effects. Picture 4 is the image of the
rose petal under a microscope magnified 10,000x. Give it a shot!

You may now answer the following questions briefly.

1. Are there any similarities between pictures 2 and 4? If there is, what is it?

2. How can you relate the pointillist images to the cell theory postulate that living things are
made up of cells?

Guided Practice
Instructions: We are now halfway on our journey for today. Put on your thinking caps as we
discover the complexity of body structure of this lovely avian. What have you notice? The
organ that is being showed below is its brain. Brain? Yes. The center of thought, memory,
and behavior. Sounds interesting, right? Food for thought: It is made up of what?

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

You may now answer the following questions briefly.

1. Among the organization units presented (tissue, organism, organ system, cell, organ,), what
is in the lowest place?

______________________________________________________________________________________________.

2. How does the concept of organization exhibited from cells to organism?

3. Is it possible for an organism to exist without cells? Why did you say so?

Independent Practice
Instruction: All right! I know that you are ready for this. Unsheathe your mighty pen as we
answer the questions below. Kindly encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1.) The fundamental unit of life is the ______.

A) organism
B) organ system
C) organ
D) cell
2.) The cell theory states that all living things are composed of _______________.
A) atoms
B) molecules
C) organelles
D) cells
3.) The first man to observe live cell under microscope was
A) Hooke
B) Leeuwenhoek
C) Schleiden
D) Schwann
4.) He placed a slice of cork under his microscope and he called the structure observed as
"cell". The person mentioned was ____________________.
A) Hooke
B) Leeuwenhoek
C) Schleiden
D) Schwann
5.) All the following statements are true regarding the cell theory except
A) All living things are made up of cells
B) All cells arise randomly
C) Cell is the basic functional unit of life
D) All cells arise from pre-existing cells

Closure Activity
Instruction: Hooray! I hope you recognize the importance of cell theory to the advancement
of science. Bacteria, protist, fungi, plants, and even animals-Us, are made up of cells. As the
smallest, basic functional unit of life, it is very important for us to study cell so that we can
understand the bigger picture of life. As the Filipino maxim goes, Ang hindi lumingon sa
pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan. On the space provided, write acronym
for the word C-E-L-L-S about what have you learned today.

Explore Activity (Optional)

Instruction: Hello there, tiger! This section is reserved for bored, yet thirsty for more
challenges. C'mon, let's give it a try. Read the selection below. It is a laboratory setup made by
Louis Pasteur to finally refute Spontaneous Generation Hypothesis that life came from
nonliving materials, a prevailing belief for more than one millenia, that is a direct challenge to
cell (germ) theory. As one of the spectators, based on the given circumstances, what would be
the conclusion of his experiment?

Conclusion: (Hint: Where does the growth came from?)

Additional Explore Activity (Optional)

Instruction: Super! More? Here's one for you, gladiator. . . something out from this world,
literally. Exobiology is the study of life on other planets. In recent years, scientists have sent
various spacecraft out into the galaxy in search for extraterrestrial life. Assuming that all life
shares common properties, what should exobiologists be looking for as they explore other
worlds?
