Answer the following set of questions. Pay attention to the keywords in the question stem to plan your
answer, and to the grading indications of each to ensure you are meeting the requirements.

1. Define the term extended metaphor. Research an example to support your answer.
Extended metaphor is comparison between two unlike thing that continue throughout the series of
sentences in a paragraph. Its often more than a sentence and sometimes a whole paragraph can
represent an extended metaphor.

In this passage, his imagination is compared to a circus. The three-hundred-ring circus represent the
wide ideas that his imagination could slip into. The action of leaving the tent and getting some popcorn
represented the idea of him coming back to reality from this imagination.

2. Locate the extended metaphor in chapter 6. Break the metaphor down into smaller symbolic units
below, and next to each symbol, suggest both the meaning of the symbol in relation to the metaphor,
as well as the pertinence to TItas life.

restriction and rules and she saw the possibilities
in her future. Tita had broken the tradition of
following Mama Elena and gaining her freedom
as a result of it. Now shes free like a bird and
she can flys to anywhere she wanted to.

emotions. When matches are moldy and damp
its hard to be light up again meaning that her life
is so dim that hardly anything will make Tita

paragraph Dr. John Brown reassure Titas

starts to feel better because of the warmth that
she felt being beside Dr. John Brown.
Warmth in this chapter symbolize the cure for
Titas moldy matches or her moldy moods. When
Tita arrived at Dr. John Brown house she felt a
faint sensation of warmth which meant that Tita is
happy being with Dr. John Brown. Dr. John
Brown is slowly curing the moldiness that the
ranch had give Tita and its slowly helping Tita.
After a while, Tita starts to communicating with
Dr. John Brown which mean her matches are
healing and its easier to be light up.
In this section of the book, oxygen represent
hope and love Tita received. Oxygen is needed
element for matches to be light up. Tita needs
somebodys love to light up her matches and she
needed hope in order to do so. In the first few
chapters of the book the oxygen from Pedro is
missing and thats why her matches are not light
up. As a result, she is losing hope and she not
receiving any love. However, in this chapter Dr.
John Brown is giving her both and now her
matches are not moldy anymore.
Candle and oxygen are key factors to light up a
match. Candle is the factor to keep a fire lit after
the starting explosion that light up the matches.
Candle in this case would be Titas passion in
food and it determine the length of fire.
Phosphorus is the key to open up Titas mind. Dr.
John Brown can provide oxygen and warmth for
Tita but phosphorus is the key to cause the
explosion in light up Titas matches. Tita came to
Dr. John with a close mind and phosphorus
helped Dr. John Brown to open up Titas feeling.
With an open mind Tita accept Dr. John Brown
and Dr.John Brown helped Tita with her moldy
matches. After curing Titas moldy matches
everything combined to light up Titas matches
again.
