Onsite Power Transformer PD Measuring System

Through its RIF Bushings Built-In Sensing

RHM International can now offer its customers the ability to detect and measure in the field PD activity
in their operating transformers. This proprietary measurement system can only be used when RHM
International RIF bushings equipped with the Smart Measurement Terminal (SMT) are installed on the
transformer. A portable recording and display unit is then used to collect information.

Provides PD localization by using the different bushings
A straightforward chain of measure: A large C2 capacitance integrated in the RIF bushing at
production time and brought out to a SMT is used to measure the transformers discharge. The portable
PD device collects and processes the high frequency discharge signals from the SMT. Diagnostic software
developed for the RHM measurement system provides the analysis and display.

Alternative Signal Collection Scheme

You can elect to order one RIF bushing with a permanent hard wire connection from the SMT to the
transformer control box as only one SMT PD sensor is required to detect PD activity in a transformer.
This scheme allows the customer to periodically check his transformer for PD activity from the
transformer control box with the transformer remaining in-service. If PD is detected and the customer
wants to pinpoint the area of the PD activity (and provided other RIF bushings with a SMT have being
installed) signals from other RIF bushing SMT PD sensors can be inputted to the portable PD detection
device. This however requires taking the transformer out of service to connect the additional test leads.
