ModelUnitedNations,alsoknownasModelUNorMUN,isaneducationalsimulationand/oracademiccompetition
inwhichstudentscanlearnaboutdiplomacy,internationalrelations,andtheUnitedNations.MUNinvolvesand
teachesresearching,publicspeaking,debating,andwritingskills,inadditiontocriticalthinking,teamwork,and
leadershipabilities.[1][2]Usuallyanextracurricularactivity,someschoolsalsoofferMUNasaclass.[3]

ParticipantsinModelUNconferences,knownasdelegates,areplacedincommitteesandassignedcountries,or
occasionallyotherorganizationsorpoliticalfigures,wheretheyrepresentmembersofthatbody.Theyarepresented
withtheirassignmentsinadvance,alongwithatopicortopicsthattheircommitteewilldiscuss.Delegatesconduct
researchbeforeconferencesandformulatepositionsthattheywillthendebatewiththeirfellowdelegatesinthe
committee,stayingtruetotheactualpositionofthemembertheyrepresent.[4]Attheendofaconference,thebest CISSMUNinShanghai,China
performingdelegatesineachcommittee,aswellasdelegations,aresometimesrecognizedwithawards.

ModelUNparticipantsincludestudentsatmiddleschool,highschool,andcollege/universitylevels,withmostconferences
cateringtojustoneofthesethreelevels(highschoolandcollegeconferencesbeingmostcommon).[5]Delegatesusually
attendconferencestogetherasdelegationssentbytheirrespectiveschools'oruniversities'ModelUNclubs,thoughsome
delegatesattendconferencesindependently.[6]

ModelUNbeganasaseriesofstudentledModelLeagueofNationssimulations.ItisbelievedthatthefirstModelLeagueofNationsconferenceswereheldinthe
1920s,beforetransitioningtoModelUNaftertheformationoftheLeague'ssuccessororganization,theUnitedNations,in1945.[7]Today,someModelUN
conferencesincludesimulationsoftheLeagueofNationsamongtheircommitteeofferings.

ThefirstModelUnitedNationswasheldatSt.LawrenceUniversityfromFebruary1113,1949.[8]ItwasinitiatedbyDr.HarryReiff,HeadoftheHistoryand
GovernmentDepartment,withtheassistanceofdepartmentalcolleagueOttoL.George.[9]Dr.ReiffwasatechnicaladvisorontheUnitedStatesdelegationtothe
1945SanFranciscoConference(wheretheUNCharterwaswritten)andtheUNOrganizationalConferenceinLondonin194546(wheretheUNwas
established).[10]The1949St.LawrenceUniversityModelUNconferenceincludeddelegatesfromregionalconferencesanduniversities,includingAdelphi,
Alfred,Champlain,Clarkson,McGill,Middlebury,Potsdam,St.Michael's,andVermont.[11][12][13]TheconferencecontinuedannualformanyyearsatSt.
Lawrence[14][15]andhasrecentlybeenrevivedonthecampus.[16]OtherModelUNconferenceweredevelopedlateratBerkeley,HarvardandtheNationalModel
UnitedNations[17][18]HarvardModelUnitedNations(HMUN),andNationalModelUnitedNations(NMUNNY)aswellasmanyothercollegesanduniversities.
Inrecentdecades,ModelUNhasspreadtoEastandSouthAsia,theMiddleEastandNorthAfrica,andsubSaharanAfrica,withmajorconferenceorganizerssuch
asIndianInternationalModelUnitedNations,HarvardandTHIMUNestablishingadditionalconferencesintheseregionstomeetburgeoningdemand.[19]TheIvy
LeagueModelUnitedNations,anarmoftheModelUNattheUniversityofPennsylvania,hostsconferencesforhighschoolageddelegatesinIndiaandChina,as
well.[20][21]

Procedures
Inordertomaintaindecorum,mostModelUNcommitteesuseparliamentaryprocedurederivedfromRobert'sRulesof
Order.However,mostcrisiscommitteesforgotheformalityofparliamentaryproceduresoastoensuresmootheroperation.
Inaddition,recentlytheUnitedNationshasspearheadedeffortstointroducenewModelUNrulesofprocedurethatare
morecloselyalignedwiththoseusedbytheactualUN.[22][23][24][25]SincethereisnogoverningbodyforMUNs,each
conferencediffersintherulesofprocedure.ThefollowingrulesofprocedureapplytogeneralMUNsbutmaynotapplyto
everyMUN:

MUNsarerunbyagroupofadministratorsknownasthedais.AdaisisheadedbyaSecretaryGeneral.Eachcommittee
usuallyhasachair(alsoknownasmoderator),amemberofthedaisthatenforcestherulesofprocedure.Adelegatemay
Delegatesnegotiatingduringan
requestthecommitteeasawholetoperformaparticularactionthisisknownasamotion.Documentsaimingtoaddress
unmoderatedcaucus
theissueofthecommitteeareknownasresolutionsandarevotedforratification.[26]

MUNcommitteescanbedividedintothreegeneralsessions:formaldebate,moderatedcaucus,andunmoderatedcaucus.Inaformaldebate,thestaffmaintainsa
listofspeakersandthedelegatesfollowtheorderwrittenonthe'speakerlist'.Speakersmaybeaddedtothespeakerlistbyraisingtheirplacardsorsendinganote
tothechair.Duringthistime,delegatestalktotheentirecommittee.Theymakespeeches,answerquestions,anddebateonresolutionsandamendments.Ifthere
arenoothermotions,thecommitteegoesbacktoformaldebatebydefault.Thereisusuallyatimelimit.Inamoderatedcaucus,thecommitteegoesintoarecess
andtherulesofprocedurearesuspended.Anyonemayspeakifrecognizedbythechair.Avoteonamotionisnecessarytogointoamoderatedcaucus.Thereisa
comparativelyshortertimelimitperspeech.Inanunmoderatedcaucus,thedelegatesinformallymeetwithotherdelegatesandthestafffordiscussions.[25][27]

Resolutionsarethebasisofalldebate.[28]Theyareconsideredthefinalresultsofconversations,writings,andnegotiations.Resolutionsmustgothroughadraft,
approvalbythedais,andconsequentdebateandmodification.[29]

Languages
Traditionally,Englishhasbeentheofficialandworkinglanguageofmostconferences,but,asModelUNhasbecomemorepopulararoundtheworld,andas
conferencesincountriessuchastheUnitedStateshavesoughttoappealtounderrepresentedminorities(suchastheSpanishspeakingcommunity),committees
usinglanguagesotherthanEnglish,orwhicharebilingual,havebecomecommon.[30]Itshouldbenoted,however,thatthisisstillnotyetamainstream
phenomenon,especiallynotintheUnitedStates,wheremostbilingualorSpanishlanguagecommitteesarefoundat
conferenceshostedinPuertoRicoortheSouth.[31]

NearlyallModelUNconferencesrequiredelegatestowearWesternbusinessattire,asdressingprofessionallyisan
importantwaytoshowrespectforthenation,organization,orindividualoneisrepresenting,aswellasfortherestofones

StatesofAmerica(UNAUSA)areconsideredimportantorganizingforces.[36]

ModelUNbyregionandcountry
AlthoughModelUnitedNationsoriginatedintheUnitedStates,MUNclubsandconferencesarenotisolatedtothatcountry.Rather,liketheactualUN,Model
UNisfoundincountriesaroundtheglobe.[37]BecauseModelUNisdecentralizedandhasgrownautonomouslyaroundtheworld,therearesignificantdifferences
inhowMUNisdonebetweenregions.[38]

Denmark

MUNisrelativelypopularinDenmark,withconferencesatbothhighschoolanduniversitylevel.Itwasfirstintroducedin2003,[39]ithassincespreadwith3
majorconferencesathighschoollevel,withatleast400participantsateachconference,[39][40]withBIGMUNbeingthelargestconferenceinScandinavia.[41]

TheNetherlands
MUNintheNetherlandsisalmostentirelyrelatedtoTheHagueInternationalModelUnitedNations(THIMUN)conference,whichincludesover3500
participantscomingfromaround200schoolsand100differentcountries.[42]AlthoughitisnotlocatedneartheUnitedNationsHeadquartersinNewYork,itis
oneofthepioneerMUNconferencesintheworld,sinceithasbeenfoundedin1968andlocatedintheInternationalCourtofJustice's(ICJ)worldcityofthe
Hague.AwholenetworkofconferencesismarkedbyitsTHIMUNaffiliation,alabelwhichbasicallydescribestheuniversalityoftheproceduresthatrulethe
conferenceandmakeitpartoftheUNrecognizedfoundation.In1995theTHIMUNFoundationwasaccreditedasaNonGovernmentalOrganisation(NGO)
associatedwiththeUnitedNationsDepartmentofPublicInformation.[43]Also,theTHIMUNhasestablisheditsownconferences'networkthroughouttime:

events,typicallyrunningforthreetofourdays,occurwithinseveralAustralianstates,andaretimedtocoincidewithholidayperiodsintertiarysemesters.

Bangladesh

ModelUnitedNationsispracticedinBangladeshsince2002.ThefirstMUNtotakeplacewastheModelUnitedNationsonCombatingTerrorismBangladesh
ModelUnitedNations2002.[54][55]Sincethen,plentyofMUNconferenceshavebeenheldinthecountry.ButtheconceptofMUNbecameapopularonein
Bangladeshfrom2013.[56]

UnitedNationsYouthandStudentsAssociationofBangladesh(UNYSAB)isthepioneerofMUNinBangladesh.BangladeshModelUnitedNationsconferences,
BangladeshInternationalModelUnitedNations2012,Dhaka+20,BrainwizMUN2013,UNYSABMUN2014wereorganizedbyUNYSAB.MUNsifmuch
largernumberswereorganizedbyUNYSABthepastyearwhentheyorganizedBangladeshModelUnitedNations(BANMUN)SessionVIIinJune2015with
morethan560delegates[57]andBangladeshInternationalModelUnitedNations(BIMUN)SessionIIinNovember2015,withover850delegates,thelargest

ModelUnitedNationsfirstcametoChinain1995,whentheeliteChinaForeignAffairsUniversityheldthecountry'sfirstcollegiateMUNconference.[62][63][64]
ArrivinginChinesehighschoolsin2005,ModelUNexpandedrapidly.PekingUniversity(PKU)students,afterattendingHarvard'sHMUN,organizedthefirst
nationalModelUNconferenceforhighschoolstudentsinChina.PKU'sconferencewasinitiallybackedbyUNAUSA,howeversupportwascurtailedin2010
duetotheGreatRecession.

Between2005and2010,nationalMUNconferencessuchasthoseorganizedbyPKUandtherivalingFudanUniversityinShanghaidrewthebesthighschool
studentsfromaroundthecountry,whocompetedforlimitedspaces.Overtime,lesserknownnationalconferences,aswellasregionalandevenlocalconferences
forhighschoolstudents,begantodevelopandgraduallyspreadtocitiesbeyondBeijingandShanghai.[65]

IntherealmofinterscholasticMUNconferencesinChina,thewidelyacknowledgedtop3conferencesarecalled"theABC":AsianInternationalModelUnited
NationsheldbyPekingUniversityBeijingModelUnitedNationsheldbyChinaForeignAffairsUniversity,andChinaNationalModelUnitedNations,heldby
UnitedNationsAssociationofChina,hostedindifferentcitiesannually.[66]

MostMUNconferencesinChinaareorganizedthroughprivateoracademicenterprises,howeversomegovernmentaffiliatedMUNshavealsoflourished,and
recently,unofficialstudentrungrassrootsconferenceshavebeguntodominatetheChineseMUNscene.[65]

In1996,theCathedralModelUnitedNationswashostedbyTheCathedralandJohnConnonSchoolinMumbai.Sincethen,schoolsinIndiastartedtakingup
ModelUnitedNationsasanactivityintheirschool.ModelUnitedNationsinIndiareallytookoffandstartedreachingschoolsacrossthebreadthandlengthofthe
