Candidate Summary

Locus of Control
Currently High Internal 4
The candidate has started to develop some effective coping strategies; he is able to take responsibility for his
performance and is able to reflect well on more distant past mistakes.
Under pressure he can become defensive however, particularly when faced with negative feedback.
He has the potential to be a very inwardly facing individual and may not always understand his impact on others.

Self-Efficacy Generally appropriate but can fluctuate to over-confidence, degrading quickly when challenged.
Adherence Generally understands when to roll with the punches and when things are too difficult.
Motivation Appears motivated but can be disrupted if he feels events turn against him.
Influence May sometimes be over-controlling of self and not work well with others.

Strengths
The candidate presented as an open and confident individual at interview; he was honest when discussing past
mistakes and failures and demonstrated some research and preparation for the assessment day.
He displayed a clear interest in aircrafts, completing an AME and currently working at Jet Airways as a technician.
He maintained good scans of his environment during the assessment showing signs of visual dominance.
He was able to demonstrate the ability to recover by himself from mistakes and learnt from them, showing learning
and the potential to respond well in a busy and dynamic environment.

Weaknesses
The candidate admitted he can be lazy at times; he appears to have some natural abilities and acknowledged that
this has made him over-confident in his approach to exams and impacted on performance, failing to prepare as
thoroughly as he could do.
His personality results suggested he may display passive-aggressive behaviour at times; he is very internally focused
and may not always consider the opinions or requirements of others, impacting on MCC.
He can have a tendency to fall back on excuses when under-performing.
The candidate does not respond well to negative feedback; he became defensive during the debrief and was
intolerant when challenged, becoming upset and anxious.

Suitability/Fit
Training Organisation & Syllabus 3
The candidate does have some potential to complete the course but he will need to ensure he applies himself.
His technical nature and experience as a a/c technician should assist his development of knowledge and
understanding during ground school; he may display a tendency to let himself down when it comes to exams
however, particularly if over-confident in his abilities.
He did display some ability to multi-task and learn on the day, suggesting he should improve well with training.
He may not interact effectively with others however; he is driven and very focused on his own requirements, not
always understanding his impact on others and becoming defensive and hostile when challenged.

IndiGo 3
He should respond well to a structured environment and this should help mitigate his tendency to under-prepare.
He has a clear passion and interest in aviation and had a reasonable knowledge of IndiGo; he will need to feel
supported to maintain confidence levels however and will not enjoy receiving criticism, becoming defensive.
He should be able to adapt to the demands of the Airbus, although accuracy in processing will need to improve.

Candidate 10033157 2
Performance in Training Pipeline

Learning Style Description

Will find the development of physical skills challenging as they become more complex and require more
automaticity with the need to think and do quickly. This profile type will spend a great deal of time thinking
about actions and worrying about their lack of ability, rather than focusing on self-management and control.
Once a task is learned it will be repeated well when the individual is comfortable. However, the application of
pressure may mean that even well learned physical skills are disrupted or poorly executed. They may have a
tendency to cling to specifics, guidelines and well-rehearsed routines once learned, as although the practical
ability to adapt to change is present, the lack of application and risk-avoidance characteristics may slow the
learning process, unless they can be seen to be well proven and low-risk. Their technical strengths can help
them understand the reasons for change and, if there is a good case to be made, then the individual will adopt
the changes. Therefore, with good information this profile is very trainable for certain environments. However,
the tendency to self-defeat may mean that the good intentions are never quite carried through or strategies are
suddenly changed at the last minute as the defensive fear of failure characteristics kick in. There is an
understanding of the theory but often a lack of follow through when it comes to practicing the reality; if the
stakes are high for the individual then this will always ensure that they focus on delivering results, providing they
are in a supportive environment. This profile may lack adherence and resilience.

Syllabus Fit - Detail

Code Attribute Fit

3 Conceptual Understanding of The candidate may not enjoy more conceptual and theoretical
Laws topics, although his technical nature should respond reasonably
well to the classroom environment. He should complete
successfully if he applies himself appropriately.

4 Practical Application of Rules The candidate should enjoy more practical topics and this area
should appeal to his rule and process-based nature. He may
have a tendency to over technalise issues however, which could
slow learning. Providing he does not allow complacency to
impact he should perform well in these subjects.

3 Understanding Principles of The candidate should not have too many problems meeting the
Natural Science requirements for this element and should enjoy the more
technical subjects. He will need to ensure he applies discipline
and focus but should have the aptitude to gain a thorough
understanding.

2 Performance The candidate may not always fully prepare to meet

requirements, which may detrimentally impact his ability to
convert theory into practice. He is aware he can allow over-
confidence and a lack of work ethic to impact on his results
however and should be able to learn from previous mistakes and
apply himself when required, providing confidence and motivation
levels are maintained.

3 Basic Flying The candidate is likely to enjoy the experience and his learning
may benefit from getting hands-on experience in the cockpit. He
may take a little while to adjust to the sensitivity of controls and
develop adequate coordination but if he applies himself he should
progress well and improve.

Candidate 10033157 3
2 Solo Flying The candidate could find the loss of the safety net of an instructor
generates anxiety that detrimentally impacts on performance; he
may need time to feel comfortable operating out of his comfort
zone. He was able to demonstrate improvement in his
coordination and control however and should improve his skills
and confidence with practice.

3 PPL Check Flight The candidate displayed some ability to manage thinking and
doing requirements; he is not likely to enjoy the formal test
environment however and could allow nerves or a lack of
preparation to impact. If he applies himself he should have the
skills required.

3 Communications The candidate is able to communicate reasonably effectively,

displaying an average level of interaction and reporting on the
day. His technical nature should help him adapt to the formal
nature of verbal protocols, although he may take time to
understand and take on board others' requirements when under
pressure.

3 Airmanship The candidate showed some aptitude but will need to focus
attention and not over analyse, as he can tend to suffer PIO and
over react to errors. As workload increased he did demonstrate
some good recovery and should improve with practice.

4 Standard Operating The candidate appears quite process based and his technical and
Procedures risk-averse nature should ensure that he develops a thorough
understanding of rules and procedures. At times he may lack
sufficient attention to detail however.

3 CPL Check Flight The candidate should be becoming a more confident operator at
this stage and should be able to meet skill requirements if he has
prepared appropriately. He will need to work on maintaining
accurate information processing under pressure however as this
can currently degrade.

3 Multi-Engine Check Flight The candidate provided evidence that he may perform better
when busy as he has less time to over technalise issues; he may
find the multi-crew requirements take some adjusting to however
and will need to overcome his tendency to show occasional lapses
and disruption in his physical performance. If he starts to feel too
far out of his comfort zone this may generate anxiety and more
defensive fear of failure behaviour.

2 Instrument Rating Despite referencing internally the candidate struggled to maintain

performance when his external visual references were removed,
disrupting during the cloud task. He may take time to develop
the skills required and will need to improve his attention to detail
and speed when converting information into actions.

2 Multi-Crew Co-operation The candidate may not always work well in teams, with the
potential to become withdrawn when required to deal with the
pressures of the dynamic cockpit environment. He may not be the
most open with others and has the potential to become defensive
in the MCC environment, particularly when challenged or
criticised. Making friends does not appear high on his agenda.

Candidate 10033157 6
Performance in Operational Pipeline

Assessment Performance Description

Structured consistent physical task performer who likes to receive formal tuition in skills. Learns best in a processed
and structured environment, may focus on practice and likes to be able to work with facts about tasks. Will have a
good practical and applied ability to pick up physical skills and will also be able to apply the thinking bit of
performance as they like information and logic. Can make the transition between technical data and practical
application but may be prone to struggling with workload when tasks become more data and process orientated.

These candidates are generally trainable but they have to be taught how to stop worrying and how to understand
how to deal with failure and not see it as a permanent slight on their ability rather than part of the transition process
of learning. The fact that they will not take risks slows down change but if they understand the negative aspects of
their behaviour, they will quickly adopt positive changes. There are significant positive attributes of this profile
which is the ability to move on, not dwelling on the past. Low self-esteem, self defeating behaviours can often
cause the individual to lose sight of their strengths and become chameleon characters taking on the attributes of
others rather than developing confidence in their own style which contributes to the erratic behaviours.

Personality and Behaviour

If the individual is uncomfortable with the task in any way this may mean that many excuses and many events
conspire to prevent the task being completed, as they will not be happy asking for help if problems arise, expecting
their ability to carry them through. They will understand the task requirements but may not practice the reality,
which can feed a degree of insecurity and reduced self-esteem that can be manifested through defensive and
protective mannerisms if challenged or threatened. They may appear closed to ideas at times and often be a bit
unhelpful when asked for advice if they think it may give others a perceived advantage. They will dislike a constantly
changing environment and may have trouble prioritising and settling if there is no feedback on performance. They
often have a very good understanding of the tasks and the skills required and this can manifest itself in one of two
ways: if confident, through a helpful and positive approach which, because it is understood so well, is insightful and
informed; but if under-confident then this may come out as obstructive and destructive to themselves and others, as
they may feel a need to put others down in order to enable themselves to feel as though they are succeeding.
When confidence is low, they may tend to worry about their own ability and allow negative imagination to take hold
that could impact to a point where they feel they have no control over their own skills, using their technical
knowledge negatively to talk themselves out of continuing because they assess the risks of failure as too high and
insurmountable rather than developing sensible and workable coping strategies to resolve the problems. May reject
or render ineffective the attempts of others to help, feeling that they must be able to resolve their own problems or
that it is a sign of weakness. They may lack self-confidence and be defensive if asked to do something they are not
prepared for. They tend to prefer individual events rather than working in teams, where they can compete against
themselves rather than overtly against others.

If scored highly in self-defeating and in internal attribution this may manifest itself in an intensity and seriousness
that may turn to negative defensiveness if challenged openly. This profile will tend to walk away from things if they
get too difficult but there will be a great deal of rationalisation provided to support the decision even if it is
somewhat skewed logic. They are more likely to give up on physical tasks and just decide that it is not what they
do, preferring to focus on cerebral tasks that come more naturally, require less effort and possibly have fewer
variables within the environment, therefore allowing more chance of success. If also scored highly in fear of failure,
the many positive features of the profile, which may be interpreted as confidence, could erode quickly and be seen
as an unwillingness to take part if the threat of failure exists, as they do not feel in control of events and feel luck
may be against them. This can manifest itself in sudden illness or injury just prior to conducting a test or event in
which they will be judged against others. There is a tendency to worry overly about the impact of the environment
and the technical problems that may arise from outside sources, rather than concentrating on what they can do to
control and manage themselves.
