Introduction/Hook:
Tell students that over the past few days, the teacher has been pulling them aside and asking them to match
pictures of shapes with the correct name, and that they have been doing a great job. Today we are going to do
a math lesson and learn about all of the shapes they were asked about.
Steps in the lesson:
1. Begin by making a T-chart with the headings Name, Shape, and Sides. Go over the five shapes they
are to learn and fill in the table. Correspond the colors of the shapes to those used on the pre-
assessment and also have students help count the number of sides.
2. After discussing the differences between the three shapes, explain to students how they are to make
their shape monsters. Show students an example shape monster first.
3. Students will be given a variety of colored sheets of paper with various sized shapes. Students will use
these shapes to make their monster on a black or white piece of construction paper with their name on
the back. First they will cut out a large body shape and then add lips, eyes, noses, mouths, teeth, and
anything else they want.
4. While they are constructing their monsters, students will record on the Monster Pieces worksheet
how many of each shape they used to make their monster.
5. When students are done, collect their Monster Pieces worksheet and the shape monsters.
Closure Activity/Wrap up:
Ferris State School of Education: Lesson Plan Template
To summarize give students a copy of the Shapes Post-Assessment worksheet, a blue, red, purple, orange,
and green crayon, and be sent to a spot at one of the four tables. Every other student will also receive a
privacy screen. For the post-assessment, students will be told to color the square blue, circle red, triangle
purple, rectangle green, and the hexagon orange.
Assessment:
Formative: Formative assessment for this lesson is done through teacher observation and matching the
Monster Pieces worksheet to the shapes used in their monsters. A pre-test was also conducted to determine
students prior knowledge of the topic.
Summative: This lesson contains a post-test that is graded by the teacher.
Accommodation/Modification:
As this is for a Kindergarten classroom, there are no specific disabilities to accommodate for at this point.
However, there are a handful of students who do not perform on the same academic level as their peers.
Below are some accommodations used for all students in the classroom which may be especially helpful for
those who struggle academically.
Flexible Seating (sit on stool or chair, can stand etc.)
Classroom Paraprofessional
