My name is Tanner Bexson and I am applying for the science teacher position at your school.
My past experience includes working as a freelance guitar instructor, tutor, substitute teacher, and as
a student teacher on four occasions. During my last and longest teaching placement I was given full
control of a chemistry 20 and science 9 classroom where I learned how to manage a classroom, teach
to different learner styles, how to plan, prepare and organize my lessons, how to give engaging and
fulfilling lessons, be a leader in my school community as well as assess learner progress. I believe
this 18 week placement thoroughly prepared me for a career in education. In addition to all of this, I
have been a volunteer and paid tutor throughout my 5-year university career, which further prepares
me for a career in education as I have received one-on-one experiences with a variety of learners.
Briefly, my philosophy includes a balance of critical and skeptical thinking as well as
meaning and discipline in a variety of subjects. I firmly believe that a truly fulfilling education
provides a student with the ability to know how to think and learn for themselves which requires
exposure to, and passionate teachers equally teaching them without bias, humanitys greatest
achievements: Arts, language, science, math, drama, music, and physical education among others.
Lastly, this education needs teachers who teach the tough skills embedded in all of these subjects:
critical thinking, skepticism, ethics, problem-solving and literacy of all kinds (technological, literal,
scientific and numeracy included). The only way to accomplish this however, I believe, is through
actively creating human (not simply teacher-student) relationships with your students.
I was a University student at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, majoring in Physics and
Education (June 3rd, 2016 with a Bsc/Bed). My placements had me teaching in a broad variety of
social contexts and levels/subjects ranging from grades 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 science, LA, math,
comm tech, chemistry, physics, and phys. ed. This experience has provided me with the ability to
communicate to a diverse range of audiences, ability to understand the social context in which I
teach, collaboration skills with my co-workers and professional colleagues, time management skills,
planning skills, assessment skills and organizational skills. As well, my background in physics has
given me unparalleled analytical skills and problem-solving skills. Lastly, I am a native English
speaker and fluent in French from a twelve year French immersion program and time spent in
Qubec City giving me the capability to teach certain subjects in French if necessary. I also have
upper-intermediate levels of Spanish which could allow me to teach an SSL course.
