triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or
damage and likelihood of occurrence.
Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe
personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.
Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe
personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.
Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause
minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.
1. GENERAL
1.01 This user manual describes features and functions of the 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panels. The
manual contains a description of the panels and installation instructions.
1.02 The 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panels are designed to provide high density terminations with
efficient cable management. Various panel designs provide applications for Central Office, CEV,
Hut and Outside Plant cabinets.
1.03 The 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel can terminate three 28-circuit M1/3 multiplexers on a
single panel. Eighty-four associated DS-1 network elements (digital switch, channel banks, etc.)
can be terminated on another panel and then cross-connects tie the two DS-1 circuits together.
1.04 The 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel operating procedures are the same as other DSX-1
equipment and are covered in ADCs DSX-1 Operational Procedures - ADCP-80-322.

2. DESCRIPTION
2.01 This section contains a functional, physical and technical description of the 84-Circuit
DSX-1 Panel.
A. Functional Description
2.02 DSX-1 equipment provides a centralized, equal level cross-connect point for digital
signals. The 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel is a high density cross-connect termination panel. It
provides jack access for monitoring, testing and circuit patching. A typical DSX-1 circuit
diagram is shown in Figure 1. Circuit cross-connects are identified by flashing LEDs. Flexible
configurations are available for front or rear cross-connect arrangements. The Input/Output
terminations are available with wire-wrap pins or 64 pin Amp connectors. Two circuit labeling
schemes, 1-84 or 1-28 A, B, C are available.

x CEV/Total Front Access Panels have all the Input/Output terminations, cross-connect
terminations, jacks and power lugs on the front. See Figure 4. This panel is used in
applications where rear access is prohibited, such as; CEVs or Huts where bays are
placed against the wall; Central offices where bays are placed back to back or against an
obstruction; OSP cabinets with front access only.
x Combo Panels combine 84 DSX-1 terminations and three DS3 interconnect circuits on a
single panel. See Figure 5. This panel is typically used in Outside Plant cabinets where a
combo panel will terminate the incoming electrical side of a 150 MB Fiber Optic
Terminal or OC3 Sonet Terminal. This panel uses Minimum Point of Presence (MPOP)
interconnect which eliminates the need for a separate DSX-3 interface.

C. Technical Description
2.06 Table 1 lists the specifications for each available 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel.
3. INSTALLATION
Danger: To prevent electrical shock, never install telephone equipment in a wet location
or during a lightning storm. When installing or modifying telephone lines, disconnect
lines at the network interface before working with uninsulated lines or terminals.
3.01 Installation of 84-Circuit DSX-1 panels involves mounting of the panels in the various
bays and wiring them to the equipment. Each panel is shipped with an installation drawing. The
drawing defines the specific termination connections required to complete the wiring.
3.02 For full bay applications 5.0 inch (12.7 cm) spacers and upper and lower cable troughs
are recommended for proper cable management. Panels are installed from the bottom of the bay
up. Except for Total Front Access panels, the Out equipment cables run down the right side
(rear) of the bay. The In equipment cables run down the left side (rear) of the bay. See Figure 8.

A. Panel Mounting
3.04 Mounting brackets, cable rings and labels are packaged separately and installed on site.
The front cross-connect cable rings are installed at the same time as the panel is secured in place.
Rear cross-connect rings and the labels are installed after the panel is secured in place.
1. Attach the mounting brackets onto each panel. Use special thread-forming screws
(provided) to achieve proper grounding. Tightened to a minimum of 8 inch/lb..
2. Install the panels in the assigned bay locations using #12-24 mounting screws provided.
For Front Cross-Connect panels place the cable rings on top of the panel mounting
bracket, then insert the mounting screws.
3. Install cable rings at the rear of the panel (for rear cross-connect models) using special
thread-forming screws as in step (1).
4. Attach the designation labels.
Danger: All DSX wiring should be connected with the system office battery input off or
disconnected at the office Battery Distribution Fuse Bay (BDFB) to prevent electrical
shock.
3.06 Installation of DSX panels involves the interconnection of circuits on terminal blocks on
the panels, and connection of power and ground for the LED indicators.
Warning: Fusing at greater than 0.75 Amps per panel may cause panel damage.
3.07 Office power to each panel should be fused at 0.75 Amp. Use a minimum of 22 AWG
wire when making power connections. Typical 84-Circuit DSX-1 panel power strips are shown
in Figure 9. Connect power wires from each panel to the fuse panel as follows:
1. Connect the 48V terminal on the panel to a NEG () terminal on the fuse panel (white
wire).
2. Connect the GND terminal on the panel to the corresponding POS (+) terminal on the
fuse panel (black wire).
3. Connect the CG terminal on the panel to the office frame ground (green wire). This is the
recommended chassis grounding procedure.
Note: The metal strap between the CG (Chassis Ground ) and SG (Shield Ground)
terminals on the module may be removed to isolate the shield ground from the chassis
ground.

3.08 The recommended cable for connecting digital equipment to DSX-1 panels is 22-26
AWG shielded twisted pair cable (AT&T 600C or 1249 equivalent) grounded at one end only.
Maximum cable length for 600C is 655 feet (200.0 m) and 450 feet (137.0 m) for 1249.
3.09 Refer to schematics and connection table found on the installation drawing for selection
of IN and OUT terminations on the DSX-1 Input/Output section of the panel.
3.10 Depending on panel configuration the Input/Output connections are; wire-wrap pins, 64
pin connectorized cables or both. Connect office equipment inputs and outputs to the selected
DSX-1 Input/Output section. Record each equipment connection on the corresponding
designation strips located at the sides of the Input/Output section.
D. Cross-Connections
3.11 The DSX-1 cross-connect wires add to the overall digital signal losses depending on the
wire length. To assure reliable signal levels, the recommended maximum cross-connect length
including cross aisle cable (when applicable) is 85 feet (26.0 m).
3.12 Select the designated digital equipment to be cross-connected by referring to the office
equipment connection records on the DSX-1 designation strips and cards.
3.13 DSX-1 cross-connections are made to wire-wrap terminals, as shown in Figure 10, on
the Cross-connect section located at either the front or rear of the panel depending upon panel
configuration. Make the desired cross-connections as follows:
1. Connect the IN T and R of the originating DSX-1 position to the OUT T and R of the
terminating DSX-1 position as selected in paragraph 3.12.
2. Connect the OUT T and R of the originating DSX-1 position to the IN T and R of the
terminating DSX-1 position .
3. Interconnect the tracer lead (TL) terminals of the originating and terminating DSX-1
units.

E. Cross-Connection Verification
3.14 Equipment assignment (cross-connects) are verified using the following procedures:
1. Insert a patch plug into the monitor jack of a equipment termination.
2. Observe the tracer lamps. The tracer lamp above the monitor jack with the plug inserted
and the tracer lamp above the monitor jack of the cross-connected equipment will flash
for about 30 seconds and then remain lit.
3.15 The above procedure may be used, on an in-service basis, without service interruption.
4. OPERATION
4.01 The operating procedures for the 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel are the same as all DSX-1
equipment. For step by step operating procedures, refer to DSX-1 Operational Procedures
ADCP-80-322.
5. MAINTENANCE
5.01 The 84-Circuit DSX-1 Panel maintenance requirements are minimal, consisting of
periodic cleaning and tracer lamp replacement.
Page 12
1998, ADC Telecommunications, Inc.
ADCP-80-329
Issue 2, September 1998
A. Preventative Maintenance
5.02 Panels should be cleaned during routine office equipment maintenance. Accumulated
dirt and film should be removed using a vacuum cleaner and clean soft brushes and cloths. Care
must be taken to prevent dust and dirt from getting into panel jacks.
B. Corrective Maintenance
Danger: All corrective maintenance should be performed with the 48 Vdc office
battery off or disconnected from the panel to avoid electrical shock.
5.04 Burned out tracer lamps are replaced at the front of the jack field. Lamps are removed by
pulling them from the sockets. No special tools are required. Replacement lamps must be
replaced with negative () terminal up.
5.05 Trouble shooting of DSX-1 jacks and wiring consists of visual inspection and continuity
testing. Cross-connections can be quickly checked by inserting a dummy plug or patch cord into
the monitor jack of appropriate circuit and observe the lit LEDs.
