Key Terms: Meaning:

Biodiversity: the existence of a wide variety of plant and animal species in their natural
environments, which is the aim of conservationists concerned about the indiscriminate
destruction of rainforests and other habitats.

Biotechnology:Is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to


manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life. The earliest
biotechnologists were farmers who developed improved species of plants and animals
by cross pollination or cross breeding. In recent years, biotechnology has expanded in
sophistication, scope, and applicability.
Intellectual property:Knowledge, creative ideas, or expressions of human mind that
have commercial value and are protectable under copyright, patent, service mark,
trademark, or trade secret laws from imitation, infringement, and dilution. Intellectual
property includes brand names, discoveries, formulas, inventions, knowledge,
registered designs, software, and works of artistic, literary, or musical nature. It is one
of the most readily tradable properties in the digital marketplace.
Maquiladora:A foreign-owned factory in Mexico at which imported parts are assembled
by lower-paid workers into products for export.

Prisoner of conscience:Are people who have been put into prison for their political or
social beliefs or for breaking the law while protesting against a political or social

system.

Reconciliation:

Refugee:: one that flees; especially : a person who flees to a foreign country or power
to escape danger or persecution.

Tariff:A tax imposed on imported goods and services. Tariffs are used to restrict trade,
as they increase the price of imported goods and services, making them more
expensive to consumers. A specific tariff is levied as a fixed fee based on the type of
item (e.g., $1,000 on any car). An ad-valorem tariff is levied based on the items value
(e.g., 10% of the cars value). Tariffs provide additional revenue for governments and
domestic producers at the expense of consumers and foreign producers. They are one
of several tools available to shape trade policy.
Peacekeeping:1.

Non governmental Organization(NGO):A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a


citizen-based association that operates independently of government, usually to deliver
resources or serve some social or political purpose.
Global Village: The world viewed as a community in which distance and isolation have
been dramatically reduced by electronic media (as television and the Internet)
