Signs and Hope of Easter

This past fall, Veronica and I planted hundreds of daffodil and tulip
bulbs. They looked old and dried out, without life, but we hoped they
would sprout life. So, we planted them with some bone meal, and
confidently waited for spring. As the weather began to turn warm again,
the bulbs quickly sprang up, and turned the south side of the manse into
a river of dark yellow Tte Tte daffodils, and the north side splash of
lighter yellow bloom of standard daffodils. Lifeless appearing bulbs
which are buried in the ground suddenly come alive in spring with vigor
and beauty is a sign of the resurrection. Jesus said, I am the resurrection
and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, (Jn
11:25, NRSV).
Another symbol of the hope of Easter is the caterpillar, which attaches
itself to a twig, spins a cocoon, dissolves into a mess, and slowly
transforms into a butterfly, which enables it to fly. As the butterfly loses
its body and is transformed into something of beauty, so we also
hope. Jesus Christ will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious
body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to
himself (Phil 3:21).
Like the butterfly, another sign is the metamorphosis of the
dragonfly. The dragonfly begins life as an egg laid in water, and becomes
a nymph that spends its life in water for six years. All it knows is
connected to the world of water. It cannot understand not being wet and
flying in the air; but one night it suddenly gets the urge to climb out of
the water, stop, rest, and dry up. Then its outer skin splits open, and the
dragonfly emerges with wings. Although it can now fly around, it cannot
go back and swim in its former home. It cannot return to its family and
friends and explain what a wonderful new life is awaiting them. The

the world of air and flight on their own when the proper time comes. Beloved, we are Gods
children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is
revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is (1 Jn 3:2).
Celebration of Easter, though, is more than celebrating the cycle of life or the changing of the
seasons. We celebrate the literal death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Resurrection means
Jesus received a new physical body that is no longer subject to death, and is still living
today. His physical and literal resurrection gives us hope that one day we ourselves will receive
new physical bodies which will be clothed with imperishability, our mortal bodies will become
immortal. We look forward to a time when we can sing, not only with hope, but by the fact of
own experience: Death has been swallowed up in victory! (1 Cor 15:52ff).

Two friends were walking through the desert. During
some point of the journey, they had an argument. One
friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who
got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything,
wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend slapped me
in the face."
They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where
they decided to take a bath. The one who had been
slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning,
but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the
near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best
friend saved my life."
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend
asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and
now you write on a stone. Why?" The friend replied
"When someone hurts us, we should write it down in
sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away.
But, when someone does something good for us, we
must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever
erase it."
Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carve your
blessings in stone.
