All About Scientific Notation!!

What is scientific notation? What is it used for?

Scientific notation is a way of making big and Scientific notation is used by scientists,
small numbers easier to work with. You do it mathematicians and engineers because it
by moving the decimal place until you have a simplifies complicated equations, making
number in between 1 and 10, then you simply them easier to solve
add a power of ten that says how many places
you moved the decimal point
Real World Example #1

The company Apple makes approximately What is that in scientific

$70,000 in profit every 60 seconds
notation?

7 x 104
Real World Example #2

The company Amazon is worth approximately What is this in scientific

$370 billion ($370,000,000,000) in profits
notation?

3.7 x 10
Real World Example #3

The population of the island Fiji is What is this in scientific

approximately 900,000
notation?

9 x 10
Real World Example #4

Beyoncs net worth is approximately $450 What is this in scientific

million ($450,000,000) as of June 2016
notation?

4.5 x 10
Real World Example #5

An iPhone first generation (16gb) sells today Whats this in scientific

for about $700
notation?

7 x 10
How do you convert numbers into scientific notation?
Example of a big number: Example of a decimal number:

72,000,000,000 0.00000526

Place the decimal point between both non-zero Place the decimal point between the first and
numbers between one and ten Hint: The
second non-zero numbers between one and ten
base is
7.2 always 10 5.26

Count the number of decimal places there are Count the number of decimal places there are
between the decimal point and the end of the between the end of the number and the decimal
number -- There are 10, and this is your exponent point -- There are 6, and this is your exponent. But
because you are moving to the left instead of the
Answer: 7.2 x 10 right, your exponent will be negative

Answer: 5.26 x 10
How do you convert scientific notation into real
numbers?
Example with a positive number: Example with a negative number:

2.6 x 10 6.1 x 10
Because the exponent is a 3, move the Because the exponent is a negative 3, move
decimal point three spaces to the right the decimal point three spaces to the left
Answer: 2,600
Answer: 0.0061
Wasnt that
easy?!
Operations with scientific notation

(3.5 x 10)(4.2 x 10) Original problem

(3.5 x 4.2) Multiply both of the first numbers together

14.7 x 10 Add the exponents together

1.47 x 10 Write this number in scientific notation

(1.47 x 10) x 10 Multiply this number by the old power

1.47 x 10 Add the exponents

Answer: 1.47 x 10
