For myself, I have been studying marketing in one form or another since I was 15 years old, stapling
flyers for my school on telephone poles and taping them in the window of the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream
Store.
My initial professional education for marketing a martial arts school came in the late 70s and early 80s
in Washington, D.C. While a branch manager at the Jhoon Rhee Institute I studied methods and systems
used to fill nine locations. I also spent a huge amount of time at the Library of Congress, reading
marketing classics by such men as Claude Hopkins, John Kennedy, David Ogilvy, John Caples, and
others that youve probably never heard of.
Next, I moved to Denver and opened five schools in 18 months with just $10,000. That was 1983 27
years ago and since then, Ive run one of the largest and most successful school organizations in the
country. Over the years Ive spent literally MILLIONS in advertising dollars, and through trial and error,
have discovered what really works.
In the process, Ive continued studying the various experts and gurus, including people like Jay
Abraham, Gary Halbert, Dan Kennedy, John Carlton, Jonathan Mizel, Corey Rudl, Joe Sugarman, Ted
Nicholas and many, many, many others.
What Ive found is that the only route to success is test, test, test. Trial and error millions in media
buys later is the only true route to knowing what will work for you and me and for our martial arts
schools in todays economy.

How am I different?
Well I opened my first school in 1975. And, have been continuously operating my Mile High
Karate schools in Denver since 1983. I currently have successful locations throughout North
America, Australia and New Zealand. Ive operated a large school, and multi-school operation.
have taught 1000s and run every aspect of a school.
How am I different?
I began studying martial arts in 1969. Trained in Tae Kwon Do with the Jhoon Rhee Institute
alongside the likes of World Champions Jeff Smith, John Chung, Charlie Lee, and the most

awesome stable of kickboxers ever assembled. More recently I was promoted to 8 Degree
Black Belt by Jeff Smith.
How am I different.
I am still totally immersed in the daily operations of martial arts schools up to doing 527
Monday and Friday I meet with and train our school managers and instructors and, solve the
everyday problems that you face in the real world (albeit at possibly a higher volume.)
How am I different?
Right now many Mile High Karate schools will do over $500,000.00 in gross revenues (in some
cases much more) and I will likely add another 20 locations by years end. I broke the
$1,000,000.00 a year barrier way back in 1985 and continue to operate a hugely successful
operation. Ive made a six figure + personal income for over 24 years strictly from schools.

Often this comes in the guise of gee I just started figuring this stuff out and had a great year
last year. What if you pay me to tell you about my short-term successes. I did $ (pick a
number $100,000 net, $400,000 gross, etc., etc.) will do more this year and, would love to
show you how I did it.
How I am different?
Well Ive already covered this for you but, lets just say that there are many people who
have a good year of two. Lets see if they can weather the ups and downs of our industry
and, boom years and recession. I only trust those whove weathered some internal and/or
external crisis and gotten back or stayed on top. Dont trust the unproven, untested
enthusiastic newcomer.
How am I different?
Ive run a large school operation since 1983. In that time nearly 100% of our teaching,
marketing, and sales were accomplished by employees (or, now partners) who had to
implement my systems. They are not dependent upon charisma or unstoppable energy. I
have spent years studying operations and marketing including formally achieving a Masters
in Business Administration that included having a literal bevy of MBAs and Ph.D.s analyze
the martial arts school business to help me create powerful duplicatable systems for school
operations.
How am I different?
In a variety of ways I continue to explore the leading edge of new technologies, teaching
techniques, marketing strategies, and technological enhancements. I explore the latest
approaches not only through my own school implementation but through an unmatched

Everyone is in "Sales"
I was at a business cocktail party a few weeks ago and I met a number of different
professionals: Doctors, Attorneys and CPAs. I was shocked at some of these professionals
seeming offended by the labels of entrepreneur and salesperson. It struck me how the
labels we put on ourselves can determine how successful we become. Our deepest beliefs can
cloud our judgment about our potential in business. I see clearly how these professionals
who dont want to be called salespeople or entrepreneurs are very limited in their mindset
of what is possible. Not only are they limited in marketing themselves but also with the
bottom line.
Everyone is in sales.
No matter what your title or profession, anyone who has succeeded at anything is an effective
salesperson. You sell your knowledge, talents, abilities, experience, point of view, beliefs,
values and your enthusiasm daily. This month we will integrate being a great salesperson with
your business practices.
As professional martial arts school owners, we want to work on ways to incorporate new
mindsets about selling ourselves and our business that will add balance, integrity to your work,
increase sales, improve relationships with clients and improve your personal satisfaction and

In the world we live in today, I do not believe that just knowing how to sell is enough anymore.
We must learn to see lifeand our customersfrom an entirely different perspective. Value
has replaced image and intrinsic worth has replaced name brands. Our clients are asking
themselves very important questions such as:
The old standard beliefs we hold about ourselves and about the world of sales must change.
Todays consumers are intelligent, alert, highly selective and independent in their thinking. To
work with todays consumers you must strive for excellence, integrity and high ethics. You
must be someone that stands out from the competition.

Faith Popcorn a leading-edge marketer and trend forecaster, who Fortune magazine called
"the Nostradamus of Marketing," writes in her bestselling book, The Popcorn Report, that

the richest, the cutest, the most powerful, and the sexiest. We are also saluting the Ethical

In the new model of selling I focus on sales as a means of creating relationships not just
making deals. We need to first honor our customers, be sensitive to their needs, interests and
desires, and caring about what is right for them.
Professional selling means selling only what you believe in, what you have passion for and
what you can completely be honest about. When you are complete in integrity with what you
sell you tap into an unlimited wellspring of creativity, energy, love and abundance.
William Brooks, author of Niche Selling: How to find your Customer in a Crowded Market says,
Most traditional sales philosophies are outdated in today's crowded marketplace. The future
belongs to the salespeople and organizations that are flexible and nontraditional in their
thinking.
Last time I looked on Amazon.com there were hundreds of books on sales. Reading the sales
technique books helps you to have a system to follow while perfecting your trade and keeps
you from having to reinvent the wheel. There are many writers such as Dan Kennedy, Brian
Tracy, Tom Hopkins just to name a few who have already covered the many aspects of
technique selling so I am urge you in their direction for those technical aspects of selling.
If you truly wish to be an influential, leader in your community, you have to persuade lots of
people that your school can help them accomplish their goals. If you TRULY believe that your
program can help them, you OWE it to
them to enroll them in your school.

If you feel positive you are on the right track! If you feel negative you have some serious work
ahead of you to change that belief. As I stated earlier everyone is in sales. No matter what
your title or profession, anyone who has succeeded at anything is an effective salesperson.
You sell your knowledge, talents, abilities, experience, point of view, beliefs, values and your
enthusiasm daily.
Please make note of when you are dealing with someone how you feel and if its negative
take note. Its costing you big bucks.

My point is that you must be dedicated to serving your internal customers first, so that they'll
serve your external customers! How YOU treat your internal team, staff, instructors, "helpers"
and volunteers, is directly related to how they treat your external customers! Give them the
tools they need.
It's never too late to turn it around or do even better than you're doing right now! Go nuts!

These leaders are directing, persuading, and leading their "people" toward their mutual goals.
However, people often need "encouragement" to do what they know they should, but for
some reason, need a little help.
I remember enrolling a family of 5 people in one of my schools more than 10 years ago. I
happened to be having lunch with my wife at a local restaurant, and (before I had a 24 hour
answering service) had the calls forwarded to my cellular phone.
I spoke to a mother, who had 3 children (older children, 17, 19, and 21) who she was
interested in getting into a TaiChi program, along with her, and her husband.
Well, I don't teach TaiChi in my school, so if I were concerned with such trivial details as the
particular "style" I teach, I'd have sent them "down the road" to go find a TaiChi school. But, I
don't limit myself to such irrelevancies, so I simply asked this mother "what specifically did she
want to get out of a TaiChi program"?
After a brief analysis of her specific needs, I concluded that my program was a perfect fit for
her and her family!
She wanted a program that the entire family could participate in together.....check!
She wanted a program that could start "slowly" as the entire family was a bit "heavy".....check!
She wanted something low impact as she was nearing 50 years old, and didn't want to risk
injury.....check! (All out students go at their own pace)
She wanted a program that could get the whole family fit, and that they could make a part of
their lives forever.......Check!
Now, If I'd have resisted persuading her that my program was a GREAT fit, and instead sent her
"down the road" to go find a TaiChi school, we'd have BOTH missed out on an amazing
relationship.
The entire family went on to earn Black Belts in my school and were AMAZING supporters of
my program.
Her daughter became a full time staff member for me for several years, paid her way through
college (working for me), and went on to Cornell University to get her MBA, for which she

credits me and our school as the "reason" she is driven to create a better world, and is now
working with several multi-national charities in developing countries.
Her son became a state champion competitor, the other son taught part time at one of my
schools as he finished college, and the mother and father STILL train, and help with just about
every special event we have in the school.
I felt that it was my responsibility to this family to enroll them in MY program, which I had
ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT would be the best decision they could possibly make. It was my
responsibility to help her see "past" the particular "style" of martial art, and see the true
benefits of my program.
You might call this "salesmanship", I call it Leadership, and this family (and thousands of
others) thank me for that leadership, and would be deeply negatively affected if I had not
demonstrated that leadership for them!

quality has increased. Before, we were just down to like 18,000 a month. We were charging about $75 a month.

I was amazed to see the similarities between Kathy's techniques and attitude towards a street situation and the way
I was taught kung fu. I have taken Kathy's class at the NAPMA conference before yet I had never seen her self
defense. I am showing the video in all my teen and adults classes to my students to try to get them to not forget
their cups, and to show them how a aggressive a women should be when encountered in a street altercation. It is
also great to show my students a World Champion kickboxer and celebrity using kung fu self defense.
I also loved Danny Driggs MMA fitness drills. That is what I've been doing for approximately 4 years in my XFT class
when my kickboxing class started to die off. I'm a student for life and truly appreciate what NAPMA is doing. I
know that some people enjoy the traditional one step self defense and the old fitness kickboxing and you will
continue to satisfy all your members yet I wanted you guys to know how much I learned, enjoyed and used the

The style of martial arts I teach is called Zen-Do Kickboxing. Zen-Do Bahrain is probably the largest school in the
Middle East. I teach children from as young as three years. Our oldest student is a 57-year-old grandmother!

Well, the biggest thing that I've found was that if you don't see your return, then Stephen Oliver will no longer have
a coaching client. If you look at it from that perspective, his key is retention, just like in his schools. If he's going to
want to keep his coaching clients, he's got to make sure that he's making you earn some money. And he's been
doing that for us. That's obvious. He's helped double our gross. It's really been paying off.

If they do participate doing their part to make kindness effortless then they lose their hard earned stripes. I am
determined to do my part in making this a better world. I also have to say another huge benefit are the brochures
and cards to choose from I use them every day in some way. The posters are awesome too.
Our biggest developmental need at our school is probably the lack of excitement in our students learning katas. I try
to make it interesting having competitions in class etc. I think they still don't totally understand the importance
even though I tell them quite often!! I would also like to develop excitement for a demonstration team.

We have begun the NAPMA padded weapons program with unbelievable success. We have begun the NAPMA Little
Ninja's program and it has been excellent as well. In November we had our first one-day holiday sale ever and
grossed over $4000.00 in retail sales. Even without the extra 4K we still did more retail sales in November and
December than the previous year. So the one-day sale was just bonus!
In December we had our first ever Holiday Party/Dinner featuring the demo team and awards for everything I could
think of under the sun. This party alone fired up the entire school so much that we picked up 11 students from
referrals in the week following the party.
In my 9 community education schools I implemented portions of the theme-based curriculum with phenomenal
success. The 8-week course ends this Friday and we have already signed 26 kids from the program (out of 171
possible) to 1-year or 3-year programs. The best I have ever converted with these programs is 17 kids last year.
We were up $10,000.00 in November and are already up $7,000.00 in December for month end and I have 2 weeks
left! If only my stock portfolio was doing this well <grin>."

months sending various necessities over seas to help our courageous soldiers to show them that we care and to say

newspaper in our region. I was totally shocked and surprised myself, but my phones are ringing from others
