4) Achievement
5) Benevolence
6) Power
7) Tradition
8) Stimulation
9) Conformity
10) Hedonism

b) Choose one value, why is the chosen value important?

The most important value is universalism. Universalism is about

understanding, appreciation, tolerance and protection of the welfare
of all people and for nature. Universalism is the starter, a basic
value that needs to be developed before other values are. It is
holistic and includes every aspect of other basic values given.
Tolerance, for example , is one of the most crucial aspect that leads
to a more harmonious world and life itself.
Self-direction and security comes in the second and third place of
the important values. Self-direction is an independent thought and
action which comprises the senses choosing, creating and exploring.
Every human being must have this value in order to live their life to
the fullest. This value also helps us in gaining new knowledge in life.
Besides, security means safety, harmony and stability of society,
relationships between one another. Security plays an important role
in protecting and maintaining harmonious relationships with the
society, family and ourselves. For example, in Malaysia itself, the
sense of security will make someone feels very protective in terms
of issues that can touch others sensitivity. Living in a multiracial,
there are a lot of things to protect and we should not create issues
regarding others sensitivity.
Hedonism is the least important value from the list since it leads
to pleasure and sensuous gratification for oneself. For example, it
can make someone forget about their responsibilities and neglect
everything important in life, thus making them more selfish. It is not
100% wrong but it is not suitable to make it as a basic value in life.
c) Is the chosen value transcends all borders?

Yes. Universalism transcends all borders in life because it is the

foundation of all basic values. Without universalism, other basic
values cannot be implemented. Universalism is practiced by every
beings without the constraints of religions, races, ages or status. It is
the basic values that keep us united and intact.

d) Do you practice and appreciate the existence of the chosen value?

How your life would be affected if the chosen value is not shared by
all? Give some example?

Yes. I do practice and appreciate the existence of universalism.

Universalism means understanding, appreciation, tolerance and
protection for the welfare of everybody and nature. If universalism is
not shared by all, conflicts will arise due to the lack of
understanding and tolerance among each other especially when we,
as humans, come from different cultural and religious backgrounds.
This can lead to unwanted fights and wars which only cause the
sufferings and deaths of people. At the end of the day, problems can
never be settled and nobody gains any positive results. Besides,
without universalism, it will be difficult to manage environmental
issues which had been a big issue recently as people are busy
competing with each other for their own needs.
Take our society as an example. We, as Malaysians, comprises of
people from different cultural and religious backgrounds and yet we
blend in well with each other. We all live peacefully and with
harmony under one country which is our beloved Malaysia. This
proves that universalism is shared among all of us and without it,
tragedies such as the 13th May might reoccur and this can disrupt
the peacefulness of our country which had been maintain for a very
long time. Furthermore, if we do not practice and appreciate
universalism, racism and discrimination will occur and this could
lead to unfair treatment towards oneself as they are being treated
unfairly because of their races.
