SPECIFICATION

25
2.1 Introduction

This section contains the specification of the Rover prototype. There are few criteria set by the client,
EMPACT, and the contractors would have to build the prototype that meets the requirement of the
project.

The prototype must be able to travel in a self-guided straight line.

The prototype must be able to roll down a slope between 30-45 degree for 2 metres.
The prototype must be able to fall through a vertical drop of 1 metre without sustaining any
serious damage.
The prototype must land and stay on its wheels during the vertical drop.
The prototype is required to carry a 600ml water bottle on top as the weight.
The dimension of the prototype must not be over 42cm (Length) x 29.7cm (Width) x 21cm
(Height).
The cost of the prototype must not exceed RM30.

2.2 Dimension Summary

The drawing package should be referred to for all the specific dimensions of the Rover prototype. This
section will contain the summarized version of the main dimensions are as follows in Table 1.0:

Dimension Name Dimension Value (cm)

Body Diameter 41
Body Base 26
Body Height without wheels 10
Body Height include the wheels 20

For Item no.4 and no.5, the Curtin Workshop can provide the following tools for you to work
with your project.
For Item no.3, no.6 and no.7, the contractors should have owned these simple tools already.
However if they do not have the tools mentioned, the designers will provide for them.
The sum of total costs for both materials and tools are RM25.86.

27
2.5 Construction Procedure

2.5.1 Chassis of Rover Prototype:

1. Measure the dimension of the shoe box with a meter rule.

2. Mark both sides of the front and back box in to the dimension of 2cm from the edge and 1cm height
from the bottom part of the base.
3. Use a drill and carefully make a hole on the marked place.
4. Remove the lid of the shoe box.

2.5.2 The axles

1. Measure the length of the PVC pipe with a meter rule.

2. Make a marking of 27cm onto the PVC pipe.
3. Repeat step 2 on another part of the PVC pipe.
3. Carefully cut the marked PVC pipe with a hacksaw provided by the workshop.
4. Insert one pipe into the front hole and another one into the back hole of the shoebox.
5. Use a hot glue gun to seal the hole tightly along with the axles attached.

2.5.3 The Wheels

1. Use a hot glue gun and attach three CDs together to become a stack.
2. Repeat step 1 for other CDs.
3. Use a scissor or cutter to cut a small part of both top and bottom of the balloons.
4. Use the balloons from step 3 to carefully wrap each stack of CDs around.
5. Use a pen and poke a hole on the middle of the balloon-wrapped CDs.
6. Use a drill and make a hole on the middle of the bottle cap.
7. Repeat step 6 for all the bottle caps.
8. Use a hot glue gun to stick two bottle caps, one on each side on the middle of the CDs. The holes
must be aligned with each other.
9. Repeat step 8 for all other CDs.
10. Insert the CDs onto the axle.

2.5.4 The Interior of Rover Prototype

1. Cover the central area of the shoebox with sponges.

2. Place a 600ml water bottle onto the middle of the sponge.
3. Make a marking on the outer shape of the water bottle.
2. Use a cutter and carefully cut the outer shape of the water bottle just like Figure (x).
3. Place the cable ties on the sponge just like Figure (y).
4. Use the duct tape to stick the cable ties onto the sponge.

28
2.6 Specialist Construction Techniques

2.6.1 Hot Glue Gun

Hot glue gun is one of the very important tools needed for this project as it is used to stick the
components together. To ensure this project to be successful, the contractors must learn how to use a
hot glue gun. First, do not touch the hot glue as this will burn the skin. Next is the amount of glue
applied must be appropriate. If too less glue is applied, the components will not hold together very long
and will break apart easily. Likewise, if too much glue is applied, it will cause the wheel to unable to
rotate freely.

2.6.2 Power Drill

Power drill is used to make hole on the components. To use a power drill effectively, a G-clamp
can be used to hold the component strongly for accurate drilling. For safety purpose, the contractors
must check if there is a leakage of electricity for the power drill.

2.6.3 Hacksaw
Hacksaw is used to cut hard components such as PVC pipe into parts. Hacksaw can be very
dangerous as it has sharp saw tooth which may cause bleeding or other serious injuries. Similarly to
power drill, contractors can use a G-clamp to hold the component hence easier to cut the component
without them moving around. Also, contractors are advised to wear gloves during the cutting process to
minimize the danger chance.

TENDER EVALUATION
CRITERIA

30
3.0 Introduction

This TEC will be used in selecting the most suitable group of contractors for the
construction of our teams Rover Prototype. The contractors will be evaluated according
to the criteria mentioned below to be selected rather than being biased towards any group.
The main purpose of this TEC is that all contractors undergo same fair evaluation in
order to be chosen for the construction of this car.

The table includes marking scheme for every criteria and some criteria encompass some
important tasks that must be satisfied in order to get the contract. It should be noted that
once a company has officially taken the contract then failing to oblige with the agreed
criteria will be dealt very strictly and the company will be penalized for doing so. Each
criteria consist of total 20 marks.
