Procedures
RATIONALE for This is the second lesson in the unit plan regarding Basic CK
the Learning Economic Principles and Civic Education. The previous lesson
Plan focused on being a good citizen in the classroom. This lesson
emphasizes being a good citizen in the community. The
standard that relates to the lesson is Standard 5.2.2.C: Identify
community projects/activities that support leadership and
public service.
Introduction Activating Prior Knowledge
Teacher asks students if they remember what a rule is.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Teacher tells students that they will be learning about
laws, which are similar to rules. They will be discussing
laws in the community. They will also be discussing
other ways to be good citizens in the community.
Teacher shows students the video titled Exploring
Community Rules and Laws.
Explicit Transition
Instructions Teacher calls students up to the rug at the front of the
room to go over the Big Idea, Essential Questions,
Objective, and Key Vocabulary.
Students are called up according to their shoe color
(blue, white, black, etc.)
Big Idea Statement
Teacher tells students that a good citizen in the
community is someone who follows the laws and helps
others.

Teacher shares the Essential Questions for the lesson:

Procedure Teacher reminds students that they will be good citizens
in their communities when they follow the laws.

citizens in their communities.
Students write their name and answer on a post-it note.
Teacher asks for volunteers to share their ideas. Each
student sticks their post-it note on the poster.
Transition
Teacher calls students up to put their post-its on the
poster according to their birthdays (Spring, Summer,
Fall, Winter).
Modeling of the Concept
Teacher passes out the Reading Sheets and shows
students how they will complete them.

aloud to the students.

Teacher pauses occasionally for students to answer the
first four questions.
After the students think about the answer to the
questions individually, teacher asks for volunteers.

Providing the Independent Practice
Teacher gives students the chance to work on the last
portion of the Reading Sheet independently. For this
part, students think of three ways they could help
someone in their community. They write and draw their
answers.
