MST Observation Reflection 1

3rd week Monday Class 6th March, 2017

Science Lesson: The Life Cycle of Plants

Critical Observer: Ms. Jaclyn Hummel 3rd grader teacher.

It is my second observation class with my mentor, what I decide to do is to implement

one of my experiments that I have been learned it in school. In this lesson, I can see that I did a
good job comparing to the last session. In last week, I was rushed when I give the explanation so
that is why I was I need to go through each table. In this week, I feel more comfortable when I
did the science experiment lesson and I enjoyed much more than the last one. I hope the next
lesson goes as this lesson and better.

In sequence, the materials and the procedures cards were

provided from the beginning of the day which my mentor
comments to me that is a good thing that I have to be well-
prepared always before any lesson in future when I will be a
real teacher (figure 1). While now, as student teacher I can
see that when I am in teaching practice I can take some of
the teacher features that she did in the class for students. Figure 1 caption: this is the procedure
cards I called it direction to follow I
did it as an accommodation.

Therefore, the second thing that my mentor and I can observe it is that
students being more punctual and a good listener in this session. I think my
performance is getting better when students listen to my all steps and
directions one by one. When I model for them the experiment before they
do it, I notice that students were paying attention to me. This was the part
that I talk which I did not take too long, because students need more time in
experiment (exploration stage). When students did the experiment, I was

pleased because students read out the directions (figure 2). Students also
were observing and measuring the water (figure 3). I think it was pretty
much good to do the experiment accurately and having a good
observation skills.

the water amount that the plant needs.

In terms of the activity sheet, after we did the experiment students did the formative
assessment. Regards my mentor comments, she says that I need to focus more in each group
again and I did also good job on numbering the stages of plant life cycle. However, students
were not forget to label their plastic cups as I did (figure 4). The good thing is that the class goes
as I want, student were patient and work step by step.

Overall, I think is a good track for students to follow. I managed the students very well, when
I explain the experiment by asking them questions, attracting their attention, and ask them what
to do next? In this way, my performance was highly increased in positive way as I did not to
reinforce the good group at the end of the lesson. My mentor comments usually teach me to do a
good job in next teaching lessons.
