Instructional Design Plan

By: Shea Hurst
Part I: Identification of the Learning Problem

General Audience
The primary audience consists of certified teachers and support staff of all ages, experience

levels, and areas within Clubview Elementary School. The primary audience teaches grades

Kindergarten through Fifth. The ages of these students vary widely from five to eleven

years. Any personnel involved in direct instruction will be among the first to receive the training.

The training may be given to grade levels at different times.

Identification of Learning Problem

The teachers at Clubview Elementary teach at an IB (International Baccalaureate) school that has

excellent state test scores meeting and exceeding the standards in all grade levels. The

International Baccalaureate Programme aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring

young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural

understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and

international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and

rigorous assessment. Teachers need to pre-assess learning before new skills are introduced,

monitor progress throughout the learning, and assess learning after skill is taught. Teachers need

new, fun ways to assess students before, during, and after instruction to monitor progress and

learning.

Goal
The goal is for teachers to meet the requirements of the IB programme in the area of

assessments. These requirements are: the school uses a range of strategies and tools to assess

student learning, the school provides students with feedback to inform and improve their
learning, the school analyses assessment data to inform teaching and learning by ensuring that

students knowledge and understanding are assessed prior to new learning.

Instructional Goals
Users will create an account in Socrative.
Users will maneuver through Socrative to assign quizzes, exit tickets, and assessment

games.
Users will use Socrative to gain knowledge of students learning before, during, and after

instruction.
Users will use student results from Socrative to plan teaching and learning.

Part II: Learner Analysis

Introduction

The learners are teachers at Clubview Elementary School. These learners teach grades

Kindergarten through Fifth. The learners range from age 28 to 60. There are 4 Kindergarten, 4

first grade, 4 second grade, 5 third grade, 4 fourth grade, 4 fifth grade, 1 gifted education teacher

and 2 special education teachers. The learners have varied amounts of experience ranging from 1

year to 30 years. The learners also vary in certification, intellectual ability, technological skills,

and motivation. Paraprofessionals that contribute to instruction will be encouraged to participate

in the online module but will not be required.

Prior Knowledge

Although all teachers work with elementary students and in an IB school, few assess learning in a way to meet the

requirements of IB.

Potential Misconceptions
Student learning only needs to be assessed after the material has been taught.
Student assessments must be a sit down paper/pencil test.

Part III: Task Analysis

I conducted the task analysis using a procedural analysis. I expect that learning will most likely

occur through experience. I started by creating an outline of the steps required to create an

account on Socrative, create a quiz, launch your quiz, create a space race, exit ticket, and quick

question. To ensure I did not miss any steps, I emailed my outline to several teachers at Clubview

Elementary and asked for feedback. Potential problems were discovered as a result of the

collaboration. The feedback helped me discover these problems and clarify the steps in the task

of effectively utilizing the web tool Socrative.

Subject Matter Expert (SME)

I (Shea Hurst) will serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for this instructional plan. My

formal education consists of a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education, a masters

degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, and a gifted certification. I am currently

pursuing a certification in library media.

My primary qualification to serve as SME is my position as a second grade teacher at Clubview

Elementary School. I have been a classroom teacher for fifteen years. Throughout my teaching

career, I have become more confident in my ability to meet my students needs through ongoing

assessments throughout the learning process. For the past two years I have become efficient in

using Socrative as a tool to help with this process. Student progress and achievement have

greatly improved and have been higher than in classrooms where teachers do not use methods of

ongoing assessments.
