Abstract
Aprospectivestudyoftheprevalenceofanaemiainpregnancyamong279firsttimeattendantsof
theantenatalcareclinicatJimaHealthCentre,Jima,EthiopiawascarriedoutfromAugust20to
December15,1991.Theoverallprevalenceofanaemiawas41.9%,theratesbeing56.8%and
35.9%forruralandurbanresidentsrespectively.Themeanhaemoglobinlevelwas10.9gm/dland
6.4gm/dlforthewholegroupandanaemicwomenrespectively.Themajority(74.3%)hadmoderate
anaemia2.5%hadsevereanaemia.Therateofanaemiawashigheramongtheilliterateandin
thosewhodidnotpracticefamilyplanningofanysortandinthethirdtrimester,andincreasedwith
parity.
PIP: InsouthwesternEthiopia,interviewswereconductedwithandbloodsamplescollectedfrom
279pregnantwomenattendingtheprenatalclinicoftheJimaHealthCenterforthefirsttimeduring
theirpregnancybetweenAugust20andDecember15,1991.Aphysicianwantedtodeterminethe
prevalenceofanemiaintheJimaareaandtheleadingpredisposingfactorsplacingthesewomenat
riskofanemia.Anemiawasdefinedaslessthan11gofhemoglobin(Hb)/dl.41.9%ofthewomen
hadanemia.ThemeanHblevelforall270womenwas10.9g/dl,whileitwas6.4g/dlfortheanemic
women.Mostofthewomenwithanemia(74.3%)hadmoderateanemia(710gHb/dl).2.5%had
severeanemia(7gHb/dl).Anemiawasmostcommoninruralwomen(56.8%vs.35.9%forurban
womenp=0.001)andilliteratewomen(53.7%vs.37.1%forliteratewomenp=0.01).Parasitic
infectionwasassociatedwithanemiainpregnancy(p0.01).Forexample,75%ofanemicwomen
hadahookworminfectioncomparedtoonly25%ofnonanemicwomen(p0.01).Schistosomiasis
wasalsomorecommoninanemicwomenthannonanemicwomen(66.7%vs.33.3%).The
prevalenceofanemiaincreasedwithparity(nulliparity=28%,parity14=43.6%,andparity=or5=
53.5%p0.01).Italsoincreasedwithgestationalage(or=13weeks=7.7%1425weeks=36.7%,
and25weeks=50%p0.01),indicatingthatwomenwhowaituntilthethirdtrimestertoseek
prenatalcarearemorelikelytodevelopanemiaduringpregnancythanthosewhoseekitatan
earliergestationalage.Ashortbirthintervalbetweenpregnancieswasassociatedwithanemiain
pregnancy(100%for12monthsvs.33.3%for24monthsp0.01).67.5%ofallwomenwithanemia
didnotusecontraceptioncomparedtoonly45.1%ofnonanemicwomen(p0.01).Thesefindings
showaneedforproperprenatalcareandfamilyplanningandforhealthworkerstodistributeiron
supplementstogroupsathighriskofanemiaduringpregnancy.
