Reading Analysis, Goals, and Objectives
Area: Reading
Simon Samuel was given the Woodcock Johnson III, WJR-III, on February 3rd, 2012 by Nicha
Alti. He received a Broad Reading score of 79, a Basic Reading Skills score of 85, and a
Reading Comp score of 75. All three scores identify Simon as having limited proficiency in all
areas of reading. Simon scored highest in the areas of Sound Awareness with a score of 94 and
Story Recall with a score of 93 by showing average proficiency. The areas where Simon is
considered as having limited/very limited proficiency include Letter-Word Identification with a
score of 84, Understanding Directions with a score of 76, Passage Comprehension with a score
of 79, Word Attack with a score of 89, and Reading Vocabulary with a score of 79. In addition to
the WJR-III, Simon Samuel was given the STAR Reading Diagnostic test on February 27th 2012
by Mrs. Alti. This report shows that Simon Samuel is reading at a grade level equivalency of the
average second grader in the seventh month of school. The Phonological Awareness Skills Test,
PASP, is an additional assessment that was given to Simon Samuel on February 22nd, 2012 by
Mrs. Alti. Simon scored an age equivalency of between six years six months old to six years
eleven months old. While Simon is able to recognize individual sounds, he is struggling to
decode words correctly and smoothly, and does not understand the meaning behind the words
decoded. This means that the time Simon is spending so much time figuring out what the text
says that it is impacting his ability to understand the text. Simon would benefit from listening to
books read aloud at school and at home daily, increasing time spent reading silently, working on
selecting books for independent silent reading practice, and building his reading/content area
vocabulary. Simons current reading abilities make it difficult for him to keep up with the
reading requirements in all subjects within the general education classroom curriculum. Reading
skills are fundamental for Simon to achieve success in future academic and life experiences.
