contrary these weights are the essential parts and constitute perpetual motion itself;
as from them is received the universal movement which they must exercise so long
as they remain out of the centre of gravity; and when they come to be placed
together, they are so arranged that they can never obtain equilibrium, or the
‘punctum quietus’ which they unceasingly seek in their wondrous speedy flight, and
one or another of them must apply its weight vertically to the axis, which in its turn
will also move.7

When it was suggested they consult Newton about the machine, whose laws
run contrary to the very concept of Perpetual Motion, Orffyreus replied:
‘Sir you know, so far all champions of natural philosophy have ridiculed this kingly
mechanical art, the perpetual motion. I have no hope that Newton, an expert in
gravitation, will attend to my invention with a favorable response. My respect for
the Newton stops me to criticize him but I am sure he would not favorably respond
because I know, I am sure; my machine poses a big threat to his laws of motion.
Moreover, like the rest of authorities he would try to reject it, no matter how good
you describe my invention. Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo and Huygenes have already
rejected possibility of such a machine. My machine is in front of you; I have
demonstrated many experiments to you also. When you are sure of the truth, as you
all have witnessed, I see no reason why still you need to depend on the authorities
for their expert advice? In the field, where nothing is known, tell me sir, who can be
an expert except the inventor himself.’ Orffyreus expressed his viewpoint. It
rendered all the members dumb.

So you see the dilemma of PM is unique even today, and at many times your
authors couldn’t refrain from blaming Orffyreus for not exposing the secret, even
knowing it would be to his loss, as to the disposition, character, or temperament of the
inventor should not be used as an excuse to cover the inadequate, and feeble reception to
Orffyreus invention, by the educated men of the day.

Now let’s get down to the “nub” of the mater, let’s assume I have a “modern-day built”
PM machine (2m in dia.) it works silent and working to perfection ok. We can’t open it
and in any case I only sell as you see, would you give a large sum for a “blind” invention
ok maybe there’s a way round that, and you now own it, what can you do with it? (the
factory boys on its construction would dream it all night) yes you might win the rights to
production of “machines” but protection of a new “system” maybe a different kettle-of-
fish, so you see its like the “Hope diamond” in a very uncanny way, nor I wouldn’t dare
come to class myself with the great Orffyreus, and yet he couldn’t handle it.
So the night was dark and long, but I always kept hope, I had patience of the coming
dawn.
