Lesson 3: Human Geography of Northwestern Europe Part 2

Essential Question: How was your country affected by these events?

Standards:

WG-4.1: Identify the characteristics of culture and the impacts of cultural beliefs on gender roles
and the perception of race and ethnicity as they vary from one region to another (e.g., legal rights
for women in the Middle East and South Asia).
WG-4.3: Compare the roles that cultural factors such as religious, linguistic, and ethnic
differences play in cooperation and conflict within and among societies.

Objectives:

Students should be able to:

Understand that there are several major historical events that have helped to shape the
people of Northwestern Europe.
Display and explain how historical events affected each country in the region.

This lesson is designed in order to help students better understand the people of Northwestern
Europe. After a short introduction on the main topics that will be looked at, students will be
given Chromebooks and will be assigned countries, where they may work with their classmates
who have the same country. (Countries will be assigned by handing out a note card with the
countries name on it.) Then when students are done, towards the end of class, they will then
share their findings on their countries participation in the big historical events.

Directions: You will be given a notecard that has the name of the country that you
will be looking at. You may work with the others who hold the same country that you
have. You must be ready to present the information that you find. You will be telling
me how your country was affected, or took part, in some of the major historical
events in Europe. These events include, but are not limited to, the French
Revolution, the Crusades, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Industrial
Revolution, World War 1 and 2, and the Cold War. Tell me how exactly your country
