Intro to College
Getting ready for the college application process can
feel intimidating.
Will probably have numerous questions.
How does college increase confidence?
It is increases confidence because you will gain the
ability to believe in yourself.
If you thrive in classes you will gain confidence in
yourself.
College expanding opportunities
- College expands opportunities because of the
education. Once you have graduated college and get
your degree you will have a better chance in the real
world to get a job than someone who did not go to
college and get an education.
College exposure to Diversity
It offers exposure to diversity because in College you
will meet a lot of people with different interest and
different hobbies so you will be exposed to the different
things people like to do and the different interests.

To start off your campus we recommend to:
Take a campus tour: see what it will feel like to attend the
college
Schedule a meeting with the admissions officer: see if he
would recommend you to apply to the college
Sit in a class
Talk to other students see: ask them how their experience
has been like

Explore the surrounding areas of the college
Read their college newspaper: see if anything interest you
Schedule an overnight and sleep in a dorm with a student:
see if you would like to sleep in the dorms

When making a visit to the college or University that you
want
Make sure to show the admission officer that you actually
want to attend the college
Ask if they help students with lower income or have virtual
interviews for students who cant visit the campus
Visiting College campuses is one exciting thing to do when
your applying, so get motivated to vist your college.
Applying to college
Determine the application deadlines for each of
your target schools
Early decision and early applications are typically
due in November of senior year.
Submit regular decision applications
Most colleges have regular decision due dates between
Jan. 1st and March 1st
Ensure official SAT and ACT score reports are sent to
regular decision schools
Regular decision applicants typically receive an
accept/reject/wait-list response in March or April
The summer before senior year, identify potential teachers
to provide recommendation letters
Identify potential recommenders
These teachers should be from your core classes, these
teachers tend to know you best
Prepare materials for your teachers letters of
recommendation
Prepare a few bullet points for your teachers, explaining
why you chose them as recommenders
Explain how you believed you excelled academically in
their class
Go into the interview confident
Dont stress out
Youve done your research
Most admission offices say claim the optional interview
carries less weight than other parts of the application
Paying for College
Begin an ongoing dialogue with your parents about how to
pay for college
Start discussing ASAP, that way you and your family will
be comfortable with it
Start saving for college early

Outline Your financial aid plan
Use financial aid plans found on individual college
websites to know how much youll have to contribute for
your college applications
Create a list of options you plan to pursue along with the
deadlines for them all
Fill out and submit the FAFSA
This can be submitted after Jan 1 of your senior year

Schools often give aid on a first-come, first-serve basis
Fill out and submit the CSS PROFILE or other school
based aid forms
Certain schools require the CSS PROFILE in addition to
FAFSA to determine financial aid
Submit ASAP
Update your FAFSA and CSS PROFILE applications
Revise your financial aid applications with data from
your most recent year tax returns

Merced College History
In 1961, the Merced High and LeGrand High School Districts petitioned the
State Board of Education for permission to set an election to approve the
establishment of a junior college district in Merced County.

One of the first orders of business for the new junior college board was to select
a name for the college. While many potential names were considered, Merced
Junior College was chosen by a unanimous vote of the college board.
