Description and rationale: This course outlines a concept of ultimate design for framed structures subjected
to severe lateral shear force. Multi-span and multi-story frames in buildings consisted of reinforced concrete or
steel structure are treated as the framed structures. After moment-rotation relationships in plastic region of
beams and columns are obtained from stress-strain relationships of their materials, the ultimate design of
framed structures based on static mechanics with elasto-plastic curves modified from the relationships of
members is studied.
Pre-requisite: static mechanics in elastic region, basis of reinforced concrete and steel structures
Course outline:
(1) Introduction
Examples of building structures damaged by severe earthquakes and lessons from them
Difference between elastic and ultimate strengths and relation between resistance and deformability
Estimation of ultimate strengths of beam and column members in reinforced concrete or steel structures
Details to get good deformability, shear transfer mechanism, anchorage resistance and so on in
ultimate stage.
Grading: based on activities and results of assignments given during the course
