BBDM 3023 BUSINESS STRATEGY IN PRACTICE

Semester 2 of Year 3

1. Power Talks by The Star Newspaper

1.1. Power Talks is organised by The Star newspaper every month commencing
January 2016 where for each edition it would feature a prominent and successful
businessman who has built a great business empire.
1.2. Power Talks are opened to public where the great businessman will be speaking
for about two hours and this is following by Q & A session which is opened to the
floor.
1.3. The whole event is video recorded and posted onto The Star TV and it is widely
accessible through YouTube.
1.4. The Power Talks that have been conducted are as follow:

1.5. There will be other future editions in the coming months, students are encouraged
to sign up and attend the Power Talks.

2. Power Talk as Coursework Assignment

2.1. Team formation: 4 to 5 students per team to be formed by Week 2. Each team
should be named such as RAC6-02 (6 means Group 6, 02 means team #2 in the
group/class).
2.2. Each team is to select one edition of Power Talks; there should be no two teams
within the same group/class having the same edition.
2.3. All students are to view their respective Power Talks video recordings. It would
cover the main speech and the Q & A session.
2.4. While focussing on the Power Talks as the theme, students must also access to
various information sources such as websites, journals and newspapers etc to
research for relevant information relating to the company and the speaker.

2.5. After listening and reading about the success story of the speaker, you are to write
assignments according to the format below where you are to apply the theories or
frameworks that you learnt from management and corporate strategic planning
courses.

3. The Influence of Founder/CEO on The business CW1 (50%)

3.1. This is a group assignment to investigate the influences of the speaker onto the
business empire that he is controlling.
3.2. The word limit for this assignment is 6,000 words excluding table of contents,
appendices, tables, charts, diagrams and references.
3.3. The content and the guideline for the group assignment are tabulated as follow:

A. Executive Summary
It is not an introduction but a summary or abstract of the whole
assignment.
It is the essence of the write-up where readers can have a good grasp of the
story that follows.

B. Vision and Mission Statements


Critically evaluate the mission and vision statements.
Are the current mission and vision reflective of the speakers values,
beliefs and ideologies?
Revise the mission statement and vision as necessary.

C. Strategic Capability and Distinctive Competences


What are his distinctive competences in leading his company?
How he has inculcated such capabilities into his organisation?
Apply any theories or frameworks as appropriate.

D. Competitive Strategy
What are his business ideologies?
What is the business strategies used to gain competitive advantage?
Apply any relevant theories or frameworks.
What are his views on customers?
Has the speaker created any new markets or excellent products?
How he views or handles the competitors?

E. Business Grand Strategy


How he developed a grand strategy leading to a successful empire?
The types of business growth and diversification strategies used.
International or global strategy.
Any business collaborations or alliances.

F. Employee Development
How he views the importance of human capital asset.
What are the unique ways of developing and motivating employees?

3. Individual Assignment CW2 (15 marks)

3.1. This is an individual assignment where the students are to prepare independently.
3.2. The word limits is 1,000 words excluding table of contents, appendices, tables,
charts, diagrams and references.
3.3. Each student is to select one (1) related topic below related to the speaker. No two
students within the same team should write on the same topic.
3.4. The topics related to the speaker are as follow:

(i) The leadership characteristics of the speaker.


(ii) The entrepreneurship skills and behaviours.
(iii) The lessons learnt from the speaker.
(iv) What are the speakers personal values and beliefs that have great impact
on his business success?
(v) Interpret the Q & A sessions.
(vi) The corporate social responsibility/corporate governance matters.

4. Presentation of Assignment CW3 (35 marks)

4.1. This is an individual presentation during the tutorial class.


4.2. The schedule of presentation is as below.

4.3. The presentation will commence from Week 6 to Week 10 where one team will
present their assignment during each tutorial class.
4.4. The duration of presentation per team will be 30 minutes.
4.5. Dress code/attire is formal.

Instructions to Students

(a) Your submitted work must be typed using font of Times New Roman, size 12 and
with 1.5 lines spacing.

(b) The cover page of your work must list the course, the speaker and companys name,
team number, students name and registration numbers.

(c) Your work must be bonded, include a contents page, numbered pages, completed and
signed Group Plagiarism Statement, and assessment matrices (Appendix I, II and III).

(d) Your work should include a bibliography reference following the Harvard Reference
System. You will be penalised for plagiarism and not referencing your sources. You
are required to upload your work onto SafeAssign on CeL to check for plagiarism.
Where plagiarism exceeds 15%, the team is required to rewrite and upload their work

onto SafeAssign and resubmit their work. The first page only of final SafeAssign
report must be included as an appendix.

(e) Penalty marks of 15% will be deducted for Wikipedia references as this is not an
academic source.

(f) Each team is to submit their assignment on 11/11/2016 (Week 5), Friday at 3.00pm
the latest. Submit your assignment to Management Dept., 3rd Floor, SA Block.for the
attention of Mr. Tey Liang.

(g) Penalty marks of 20% will be deducted for late submission (after the deadline) for the
first week. An additional 20% will be deducted for subsequent weeks late
submission.
