JOB TITLE: Health and Safety Officer (Electrical)

LOCATION: Gallowgate Centre

LINE MANAGER: Health, Safety and Environmental Manager

Key Objectives:

1. To act as the authorising authority to ensure that all work on College low voltage
electrical installations is undertaken in a safe and efficient manner.

2. To monitor the quality and safety standards of all work undertaken on College low
voltage electrical installations and report any sub-standard performances to the
Facilities Manager and Health & Safety Manager.

3. To provide an efficient and effective service for the maintenance of electrical


equipment and installations.

4. To act at the main College liaison person on all electrical work carried out on any
electrical installations at any of the College locations.

Main Tasks:

(a) Controlling access to all College low voltage electrical installations by acting as the
issuing authority for electrical permits to work.

(b) Reviewing risk assessments and method statements from contractors to ensure that
work is undertaken with the avoidance and control of risk in accordance with
legislative requirements.

(c) Ensuring that all work on low voltage electrical installations conducted is recorded
and all system drawings and plans are updated.

(d) Liaising effectively with the Facilities Manager, Project Manager - Accommodation,
accommodation consultants, contractors and Health & Safety staff in pursuance of
duties.

(e) Ensuring all and any repair, modification, maintenance and installation of electrical
equipment is completed in a safe and efficient manner.

(f) Assisting the Health staff in monitoring the application of all Safety and health
procedures as detailed in the Aberdeen College Safety and Health Policy Manual.

In carrying out the responsibilities of the post it is expected that the postholder will do so in
accordance with the College Ethos and Equal Opportunities Policy.

which might reasonably be expected of him/her and which form part of the function of the

JOB TITLE: Health and Safety Officer (Electrical)

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
1. Up-to-date knowledge of safe working practices as applied to work or electrical
installations and systems.
2. Recent experience of working on the maintenance of electrical equipment and recent
experience of installing electrical equipment and systems.
3. Up-to-date working knowledge of the requirements of the 16th edition of the IEE
Regulations as applied to maintenance and installation work.
4. Ability to make use of computerised information systems.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
1. Approved Electrician status.
2. City & Guilds competence certificate 2381 (or equivalent) in electrical installation.
3. City & Guilds competence certificate 2391 (Inspection, Testing & certification of Electrical
Systems) or equivalent
4. 5 years experience at Approved grade.
5. HV/LV Competence Based Switching course.
6. *City & Guilds competence certificate 2391 part 2 (Design, Erection and Verification of
Electrical Systems) or equivalent
7. *IOSH Working Safely certificate.
8. *ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence).

PERSONAL QUALITIES
1. Ability to liaise effectively with contractors, consultants, College managers etc.
2. Assertiveness.

4. Good team player

WORK REQUIREMENTS
1. Commitment to College ethos and equal opportunities.

4. Commitment to ensuring that Health & Safety procedures are observed and
implemented.
5. Physical fitness appropriate for the post.
6. Clean driving licence/willingness to use own vehicle if required.
