10 PREPARATION OF DISSERTATION
In the preparation of the manuscript, care should be taken to ensure that all te
xtual
matter is typewritten to the extent possible in the same format as may be requir

dissertation.

10.1 Cover page or Title page: A specimen copy of the cover page & title page fo
r thesis
are given in Annexure I.

10.2 Bonafide certificate: The Bonafide Certificate shall be in double line spac
ing using
Font Style Times New Roman font Size 14, as per the format shown in Annexure II.

10.3 Declaration certificate: The declaration Certificate shall be in double lin

e spacing
using Font Style Times New Roman font Size 14, as per the format shown in Annexu
re
III.

10.4 Acknowledgment: As a page heading, use ACKNOWLEDGMENTS in all capital

letters, centered on the page. The acknowledgement page is required. The
acknowledgments may be written in first-person voice. If your research has been
funded by outside grants, you should check with the principal investigator of th
e grant
regarding proper acknowledgment of the funding source. Most outside funding sour
ces
require some statement of acknowledgment of the support; some also require a
disclaimer from responsibility for the results.

10.5 Dedication: The dedication page is not required and can contain whatever te
xt that you
would like to include. Text on this page needs to be in English.

10.6 Abstract: An abstract (summary) of the thesis of no more than 300 words sha
ll be
bound in immediately after the Acknowledgements page . The abstract should state
the problem, describe the methods and procedures used, and give the main results
and
conclusions.

10.7 Table of contents: As a page heading, use TABLE OF CONTENTS in all capital
letters and centered on the page. The table of contents shall immediately follow
the
abstract. It shall list in sequence, with page numbers, all relevant subdivision
s of the
thesis, including the titles of chapters, sections and subsections (up to 3 leve
l), as
appropriate; the list of references (if any); the bibliography; the list of abbr
eviations and
other functional parts of the whole thesis; any appendices; the index (if provid
ed). A
specimen copy of the Table of Contents for thesis is given in Annexure IV.

10.8 List of tables / figures / equations: As a page heading, use LIST OF FIGURES
,
LIST OF TABLES or LIST OF EQUATIONS in all capital letters, centered on the
page. There should be separate pages for each list as above even if there is onl
y one
example of each. The list should use exactly the same captions as they appear ab
ove the
tables and equations, below the figure, in the text. The typing matters under th
is
heading given in Annexure V, VI and VII.

10.9 List of symbols, abbreviation and nomenclature: The typing matters under th
is
heading given in Annexure VIII.

10.10 Chapters: The chapters should be divided as shown in section 7 of number 1

0. Each
chapter may be further divided into several divisions and sub-divisions. Each ch
apter
should be given an appropriate title.
Tables and figures in a chapter should be placed in the immediate vicinity of
the reference from where they are citied.
Footnotes should be used sparingly. They should be typed single space and
placed directly underneath in the very same page, which refers to the material
they annotate.
The format for typing Chapter headings, Divisions headings and sub-division head
ings
are explained through the following illustrative example.
Chapter heading: CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Division heading: 1.1 ABCD
Sub-division heading: 1.1.1 XYZ
Sub-sub-division heading: 1.1.1.1 PQRST

The word CHAPTER without punctuation should be centered top of the page. Two
spaces below, the title of the chapter should be typed centrally in capital lett
ers. The
division and sub-division captions along with their numbering should be left-jus
tified.
For more detail refer Annexure IX.

10.11 List of references: Any works of other researchers, if used either directl
y or indirectly,
the origin of the material thus referred to an appropriate places in the thesis
should be
indicated. All references must be cited in the text by the reference number usin
g
superscripts in square bracket e.g. if it single [1], if it is two [2,4], if it
is more than two
continuous [3-5].

The reference material should be listed in the numeric order as appeared in the
text. A
typical illustrative list given below relates to the citation example quoted abo
ve.

10.12 Appendices: As a page heading, use APPENDIX in all capital letters, centered
on
the page. Appendices are provided to give supplementary information, which if
included in the main text may serve as a distraction and could be the central th
eme
under discussion. Appendices should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g.
Appendix I, Appendix II, etc.

11 NUMBERING INSTRUCTION

11.1 Page numbering: All page numbers (whether it is in Roman or Arabic numbers)
should be typed without punctuation on the bottom right hand corner with the las
t digit
in line with the right hand margin. The preliminary pages of the thesis (such as
Title
page, Acknowledgement, Table of Contents etc.) should be numbered in lower case
Roman numerals (e.g. i, ii, iii, etc.). The title page will be numbered as (i) b
ut this
should not be typed. The page immediately following the title page shall be numb
ered
(ii) and it should appear at the bottom right hand corner as already specified.
Pages of
main text, starting with Chapter1 should be consecutively numbered using Arabic
numerals (e.g. 1,2,3, etc.).

11.2 Numbering of chapter, division and sub-division: The numbering of chapters,

divisions and sub-divisions should be done using Arabic numerals only and furthe
r
decimal notation should be used for numbering the divisions and sub-divisions wi
thin a
chapter. For example sub-division 3 under division 2 belonging to chapter 1 shou
ld be
numbered as 1.2.3. The caption for the sub-division should immediately follow th
e
number assigned to it. Every chapter beginning with first chapter should be seri
ally
numbered using Arabic numerals.

11.3 Numbering of tables, figures and equation: Tables, figures and equations ap
pearing
anywhere in the dissertation should bear appropriate numbers. The rule for assig
ning
such numbers is illustrated through an example. Thus, if a figure / table / equa
tion in
Chapter 2 happen to be the fourth then assign 2.4 to that figure / table / equat
ion. If
figures (or tables or equation) appear in appendices then figure 2 in Annexure I
I will be
designated as Figure II.2. The top line of the table continued into the next pag
e should,
for example read Table 2.1 (continued) placed centrally and underlined.
