What is TIN number?

TIN stands for Taxpayer Identification Number, is unique number allotted by Commercial tax department of
respective State. Its an eleven digit number to be mentioned in all VAT transactions and correspondence.

TIN number is used to identify dealers registered under VAT. First two digits of TIN indicate the issued state
code. However, Other 9 digit of TIN creation may differs by state governments.

TIN is applied for both sales done within a state or between two or more states. Tin is also being used to
identify dealers in the same way like PAN, to identification of assesses under income tax act.

Who Needs TIN number?
Tin number registration is must for Manufacturer/Traders/Exporters/Dealers. It comes to new registration under
VAT or Central sales tax will be allotted new TIN as registration number. However, all state commercial tax
department of India has stipulation to provide new TIN to existing Manufacturer/Traders /Exporters/Dealers to
replace their old registration / CST number.

So, there is no difference in VAT/CST/TIN because these days only one number is needed for all type of sale
you made. TIN number is called VAT number when it used for intra state sales. The same TIN number is being
considered CST number when it requires.

PAN, or permanent account number, is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identity allotted to each taxpayer by the
Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. It also serves as an identity
proof. PAN is mandatory for financial transactions such as receiving taxable salary or professional fees, sale or
purchase of assets above specified limits, buy mutual funds and more.

The primary objective of PAN is to use a universal identification key to track financial transactions that might
have a taxable component to prevent tax evasion. The PAN number remains unaffected by change of address
throughout India.

WHO MUST APPLY FOR PAN?

Anybody who earns a taxable income in India, including foreign nationals who pay taxes here

Anybody who runs a business (be it retail, services or consultancy) that had total sales, turnover or gross
receipt exceeding Rs 5 lakh in the previous financial year

HOW TO APPLY?

Use 'Form 49A' or 'Form 49AA' as applicable to you. Find more details at incometaxindia.gov.in.

You can find the location of PAN card offices in any city from the websites of the Income Tax
Department or National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).

You will need copies of proof of Identity and address.


Payment can be made using cash, cheque or demand draft.

You can also apply online through websites of the I-T Department or NSDL.

If you are applying online, the processing fee can be paid via net banking, credit card or debit card.

WHY GET A PAN NUMBER?

For payment of direct taxes

To file income tax returns

To avoid deduction of tax at higher rate than due

To enter into specific transaction such as:

(a) Sale or purchase of immovable property valued at Rs 5 lakh or more


(b) Sale or purchase of a vehicle other than a two wheeler
(c) Payment to hotels or restaurants an amount exceeding Rs 25,000 at any one time
(d) Payment in cash an amount exceeding Rs 25,000 in connection with travel to any foreign country
(e) Payment of an amount of Rs 50,000 or more to the Reserve Bank of India for acquiring bonds
(f) Payment of an amount of Rs 50,000 or more to a company or an institution for acquiring bonds or
debentures
(g) Payment of an amount of Rs 50,000 or more to a company for acquiring shares
(h) Any mutual fund purchase
(j) Deposit exceeding Rs 50,000 with any single banking institution in 24 hours.
(k) Payment exceeding Rs 5 lakh for purchase of bullion and jewellery.

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN)

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a 10 digit alphanumeric number issued to
persons who are required to deduct or collect tax on payments made by them under the Indian Income Tax
Act, 1961.Failure to apply TAN when required can attract a penalty. Once TAN is obtained, TDS returns
must be filed quarterly by the business.

Tax Payer Identification Number (TIN or VAT)

TIN-The Tax Payers Identification Number (TIN) is new unique registration number that is used for
identification of dealers registered under VAT. It consists of 11 digit numerals and will be unique throughout the
country. First two characters will represent the State Code as used by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The
set-up of the next nine characters may, however, be different in different States.TIN number or VAT registration
is a must for businesses selling goods or products like manufactures, exporters, shopkeepers, dealers,
ecommerce sellers selling goods, etc.
TIN number is used to identify dealers who are registered under VAT and it is also used for interstate sales done
between two or more states.

Central Sales Tax Number (CST)

CST is issued by the Commercial Taxes Department to an applicant under the CST Act. If you have CST
number you can purchase & sale goods from one state to another at lower tax rate.

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

The digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or stamped seal, but offering far more inherent security, a
digital signature is intended to solve the problem of tampering and impersonation in digital communications.
DSC is mainly used by the Income Tax Department, MCA (ROC), Employee Provident Fund, E-Tenders,
Directorate General of Foreign Trade and many more in India. Digital Signatures are categorized into three
classes Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Class 2 signature is commonly used during registration of a company or
to file income tax returns etc. Whereas, Class 3 Digital Signatures are used while participating in E- Tenders. It
price varies in between Rs. 1000-1500,depending on the class.

Director Identification Number (DIN)

Director identification number is a unique number require by the Director or prospective Director of the
company.This number is one of the basic requirement for Company registration.DIN typically contains all the
personal information of the person becoming a Director. DIN can only be obtained by persons. DIN can be
obtained by both Indian and Foreign Citizens by submitting identity and address proof to the
Certifying Authority. DIN cannot be obtained prior to the DSC (Digital signature Certificate) .

DPIN (Designated Partner Identification Number) is similar to DIN but used in case of registering a LLP in
India. However, both can be used interchangeably.
